The original on the left - from an old VHS source - with more intense, brighter colours. The light reflection on the gold block, the hints of light on the bevels. Overall, when you see the full animation, it has more life than the rather flat and dull new version.
Have a look at the Lambie Nairn site (Our Work > Archive > 4 > Play Movie) to see the full glory of the first Channel 4 ident.

You're absolutely right. The recreation looks comparatively a tad flimsy, (to me almost like the blocks could as likely be made of sponge), compared to the more 'solid' and fuller original where it catches the light.

would have been far cheaper and easier for channel 4 to crop an original ident to bits or even worse, not use it at all in these promos.
compare and contrast the 'great' effort that the itv plc regions went to to recreate their idents for widescreen so that they could be used in trails ... or not.

A more reasonable conclusion for the sponge blocks is that one took a good long time, went through NTSC to PAL (which'd make a difference), was intended for use as a fully usable ident and was done during that odd period where a surprising amount of effort went into 6 seconds of VT or film.
Sponge blocks however were kicked out within a 48 hour period for a promo, there's going to be differences in quality. Sounds like a statement of the obvious but nobody else seemed to be mentioning the differences in method and purpose for each version. Oh, and it's a recreation, a mock if you like.

I would've favoured a cropped version of the genuine article for that trail.
I'm confident it could have been done if they'd wanted to - it's not like they'd have any problem incorporating it when the background is plain black; surely easy enough to key the non-black elements only - the blocks - over the white background which makes up the bulk of the trail. That way would have eliminated the need to recreate the whole thing.
Sorry, you're still using VHS? That's no good...
...When it's home video format, you should obviously be recording to Betamax!

Just saw a More 4 promo for tomorrow night, which was in the style of the old menu promos.
Only got the 2nd half of it on VHS though.
Look out for these in the ad breaks
