Thanks again tesandco.

Have to say well done to C4. I was worried at first they might not do much, but I think they've got it just right with enough nostalgia on the actual day itself, plus more for those who seek it out on More4 in the weeks leading up to it, plus a season from Film4 too.

Using More4 was actually quite clever as it meant we weren't sick of the 25th anniversary by the time it arrived - and C4 kept it relatively simple on the day itself, but I think we all probably appreciated the outing for the classic idents more than we'd have liked a special ident for the occasion.

Difficult to compare as they're all very different institutions, but overall I think it probably worked better than "ITV 50" - which seemed to be milked for months, and certainly better than BBC2's 40th Birthday, of which I don't recall anything other than the special ident.

There was a documentary on BBC2's 40th looking at its launch and programme history.

Press Release about the BBC2 40th documentary programme.

Didn't realise it was so long since it's 40th - no wonder I don't remember anything. I was thinking it was just a few months ago.

When do you ever say anything else? Rolling Eyes

The retro presentation and More4 series have been nice but also really really sad. The celebrations have really highlighted how this once amazing and truly alternative channel has all but disappeared. Bar the odd documentary every now and then It's now it's all Lifestyle and Reality with hardly anything at all from the last 5 years standing out as a recognisable Channel 4 classic.

BBC4 seems to be the real alternative now, so I have to say well done to BBC4.

I don;t agree!

Big bother has gone the same way as Countdown it was non mainstream but now it is

Ch4 just can;t drop something if it becomes Mainstream

also How clean is you house or even jammie school dinner could stand out

The effort of doing trailers, font, menus, ECP, idents, breakbumper...all superb. A clock would have topped it off but never mind Very Happy

The clock was seen - in Channel 4 at 25 last night.

Agreed that Friday's effort was superb in spite of my earlier criticisms, but the absence of ECPs would have made things more authentic in re-creating that 1982 feel. The same could be said of break bumpers - although this was a handy way of allowing all the original idents to get a birthday airing.

A comment on Teletext p137 calls for the original C4 idents to be permanently reinstated - and no I didn't send it!

I cannot agree with JCB either. There have been loads of standout programmes of late. Countdown is better than ever (well, Des Lynam was better, but its is still good), Friday's quiz was great, as was the 2006 one, I love the IT crowd, and of course, my favourite programme of all time, Green Wing. There are still many others that I just haven't thought of, but basically, Channel Four is in my opinion, the best of the main analogue channels (I can't speak for five, but I don't think I'm missing much).

Yes, there are many great programmes from over the years, but these aren't going to interest everybody (do you really like like all of the ones mentioned on the documentary?). Only when you dig out an old tape from a typical day of the channel, one sees how naf some of the stuff was. It was fair enough appealing to minorities regularly in the early days, but with today's hundreds of channels, they must be highly competitive and mainstream. Yet they still manage to bring minority interests to a mainstream audience from time to time.

Is it just be who thought that they should have added the colours to the structure outside C4 HQ for the birthday?

I'm just still hoping for a Christmas one 3 years on.

You may have to continue hoping. C4 Viewer Enquiries says of the subject "at C4 we do things differently, for creativity and being distinctive".

It's about time though they screened the "old man" ident - I think I said last year that in many ways would be the perfect anti-Christmas ident.

Also they should resurrect sofa - it can't be that difficult to edit in a new image over Des Lynam on the TV set.
