Channel 4 could do a killer Christmas ident in the current theme but for three years running have chosen not to do so. Why not? Nothing more depressing really seeing The Snowman or The Alternative Christmas Message being introduced by the usual street markets, chav tower blocks etc.

I do agree - but as far as I'm aware C4 have just had two Christmas idents in the last 10 years, one with the circles and one with the square.

Couple of interesting things after the news then:
A really cool programme menu with candles in the background in the shape of the four (right colours too). First unlit, then lit! I t did look like a blast from the past actually. Then something a little more weird - two fours (one flipped) 'standing' beside a panel with chinese writing on it (looked like a break bumper with music). I think this one has been made up (though I'm not sure). It was completely random anyway - why did they think of that?

But they always used to make as big a deal about it as the BBC - and this in the days when C4 was far less "mainstream".

Just fired this off to C4:

Firstly, I would like to praise Channel 4 for bringing back its old idents to celebrate the channel's 25th anniversary on 02 November 2007. It was great to see these again and good to see the channel deviate from its usual on-screen pres elements to mark the occasion.

However, with this in mind, I would like to challenge the fact that Channel 4 has not had Christmas idents since 2003, when it always used to do so. It has been very disappointing tuning into C4 the last three Christmas Days, only to find the usual tower blocks, street markets, and hay bales introducing programmes when most other channels have a festive ident symbol in place of their usual ones. Could you please explain why this is the case? I fear there may be a hidden PC agenda behind this, of the kind which has seen local councils rebrand Christmas as "Winterval" or other ludicrous "non-offensive" names. Now that C4 has shown it CAN deviate from its usual on-screen look for a special occasion (ie. its birthday), I would be very interested to know why Christmas is not afforded the same treatment.

One further issue regarding the 25th anniversary celebrations - I notice that the iconic Channel 4 test card, once the image most associated with the channel in its early days, does not appear either on the Channel 4 at 25 website nor in any of the TV promotions. Is there a reason for this?

You've fallen for that old urban myth have you!?

Birmingham City council came up with the term 'Winterval' one year as an umbrella term for all the cultural celebrations in December/January.... which included Christmas. They didn't ban the use of the word Christmas or rebrand it

I'm sure there's someone at Horseferry Road at the moment going like this : Rolling Eyes

What do you want? them to cancel programmes for half an hour just so they can chuck up an out of date test card? It wasn't associated with the channel, it was associated with the lack of a channel (it was only shown when it was off air!) and it wasn't even exclusively Channel 4s!

Good grief.

That's the type of letter that will make them wish they hadn't bothered doing anything.

Just what is your obsession with accusing all and sundry of being slaves to political correctness? Especially Channel Four.

Keep in mind that it's political correctness that stops most of us from describing your bizarre behaviour for what it actually is.

Think on, Simon.

I fear it may not be a myth and even our local paper has now got in on the act (a Christmas cookery article headed up as "A Taste Of Winter"). Birmingham has always been a mix of different cultures, but this still seems to me like a typical gesture from a left-wing government keen to actively promote minority culture at the expense of our own, on the pretence that it's to "avoid offending anyone". It's the same mindset as those idiots in the Red Cross charity shops who banned Christmas decorations "to avoid offending other faiths". The reality is that far from achieving that goal, it actually encourages division and DOES offend those from ethnic minorities - who would otherwise accept and even embrace Christmas as part of their lives.

Oh come now...all they had to do was chuck a grab of it into a promo, a title sequence of a relevant C4 at 25 programme!

Shown off air it may have been, but in the period until September 1987 it was the most-seen image in any 24-hour period on the channel. Test Card F is already established in popular culture so why not ETP1? Don't forget it was shown on most of C4's pre-launch marketing, both on-air and in print.

Only in the context of 'this is what you're looking for when you tune in your TV set' it was purely functional

Suppose you don't want the red triangle back? People who remember Channel 4 in the 80's associate that with the channel more than their testcard!

Quite. I couldn't even say what that particular testcard looked like.

For most, a testcard was something to be quickly flicked past when one looked for television programmes on one's set.

This might be a futile discussion given Simon's desire to see programming stopped through the night and a return to powerpoint driven "nightscreen" and pages from ceefax.

Test Card F is iconic in certain quarters due to featuring a girl, a doll and a blackboard with noughts and crosses on. Any other testcard is just seen as a bunch of bars on screen.
