Funny how it changed isn't it. I'm watching it now on Virgin Catchup- mind you only took Kenneth 5 minutes to tell Annie to calm down (this was episode 1 )
Mind you the contestants were very posh lots and lots of "Well Done Annie".
The radio communications were extremely poor - live from Indonesia!
Makes you realise how things have moved on over the last 20 years and how diffrent Treasure Hunt would be today.
When
Treasure Hunt
was revived by the BBC a few years ago, satellite communication made the quality of the image wonderfully clear, and Dermot Murnaghan was great as the host. If only Wincey Willis hadn't been replaced by a computer...

Surely that was the quality of the camera and tape format, rather than a satellite. Within the format of the game there's no reason for the video to be sent back to the studio, it can all be recorded locally and then assembled in the edit
Not sure what the right term is but that version is advert free and is clock-less.
Think it must be direct from Planet 24. Unfortunately though only half of the show is up - but as always first shows are interesting, in this case it's how Chris and Gaby are barely seen together on screen.

Nice to see the 'Nasty Nick' episode of Big Brother as a reminder of how much better it was in its more innocent early days
Interesting too how this was a case of the housemates working for Big Brother rather than against them.
Brilliant episode though - and brilliantly constructed. I don't think there is a single time check from Marcus, while his narration is much more understated and informative.
The Big Brother repeat was absolutely brilliant to see, the Nasty Nick scandal was what got me hooked as an 11 year old. I remember starting secondary school and everyone was talking about it!
The big confrontation scene was so calm and straightforward and that's what made it so gripping. Imagine that happening this year but with Charley in place of Nick, Chanelle and Brian as the other housemates...it would have been much less gripping and more pathetic.
It's a shame that Channel 4 don't show some of the episodes of 'The Big Breakfast' in their birthday week. I'm sure Peter would come back and read the news again for them!
More4 should show the 'I (heart) The Big Breakfast' documentary that they had in their last episode and some clips from the show.
Happy birthday, Channel 4, and please show some 'Big Breakfast' moments!
T4 is going to be at the centre of celebrations throughout November with the T4 teams joined by a number of C4 personalities at the stations HQ in Horseferry Road, including ex-presenter Dermot O'Leary.
Re: the Sci-fi Ident, I'm pretty sure I have the accompanying trail on tape somewhere with a similar large metallic/grey 4 travelling through space.
There are a
lot
of sequences there (mainly those in the 'tapping the screen' series) which are quite new to me; amongst them just a few which I do remember - albeit vaguely!
Though the Fourscore blocks and the current parallax blocks arguably seem the most popular eras ident-wise, I don't think Channel 4's presentation has ever been below par or looked dated / inappropriate. Even when it made that jump from the blocks to the circles, the thinking behind it was solid - it was a different representation of the same idea behind the original, whilst being equally flexible and highly contemporary.
When I watched them, I only remember the original 4 blocks (though it could be from seeing them on various sites and programmes years later), and the circles era, which I agree with Paul was very different but sold itself well. The circles era shownt how you should use the faces of your channel, not by having them on a big blue & yellow set, saying that even those for ITV1 were better than what we get from them now.
For me Channel 4 have always been ahead of the times, whether its because they can recognise when something is getting old years before and then replace it with something original, I don't know.
The blocks were iconic, it's what everyone recognises channel 4 from, well those who were around then or know of them of course!
The tapping campaign - what was that all about? Were these used as idents or just break bumpers? They seem very short to be used in idents.
One question about the blocks logo, I saw a promo with an animated version used skidding across a dance floor, etc. Was the logo ever used as idents in different animating forms (but used as a whole object not the blocks animating into the 4 of course)?
The Circles. I remember them, and I quite liked them, they were modern, well created and sold the channel's faces well all ending with a strong identity. I liked the way that the faces did the talking and they were all individual scenes but all joined together through the 4 circles which were arranged differently.
I loved the promo boards, the design was great using the 4 circles fantastically with the logo, the time, the picture (and was it a symbol to sum it all up, as the day was written in a box!) .They were used all the time in this era mainly for the fact that with the faces doing the talking this was the only time for them to talk.
How did this work in a junction? Did the announcers use these to talk before an ident, such as one for father ted on a friday at 9.30, and then said but now here's friends, and then an ident into friends?? This part is all vaugue, but I do remember them using in vision CA's usually on a friday night, which was interesting.
They tried to reinvent the circle design with the short lived silent stares into the camera that split into the faces, but they dropped them and reverted quick, any idea why?
As for the box, it was a totally different take as it brought in the colour that was missing from the circles idents (unless they were using a brightly coloured face piece), and had music running for the ident to talk over (was this the first time that they had done that for Channel 4?).
They were simple, long and plain. They continued to have celebrity ones, but the majority were the colours and then the mix coloured bars with pictures of road cones and traffic, etc (all very random).
For me, this set picked up when they reinvented it where the lines were made up from many different things. My favourites being trees and lights (the one usually used before movies) if anyone's interested.
The current set again has led the way, taking a design from 25 years ago and reinterpretating it again.
The question is 25 years on, more regenerations than the doctor, but would the same logo have stuck if it wasn't such a well designed logo in the first place?
Happy Birthday Channel 4! Long may it continue, and here's hoping that one day someone will create a Christmas Ident for the channel once again!
