Besides, they don't have the rights to all the racing, or even the majority of it.
Yeah, the At The Races channel has about half. Racing UK has the rest, which is where the Channel 4 and former BBC rights came from.

Not sure if it's been mentioned on here, but DigitalSpy have news on the upcoming Stand Up To Cancer fundraiser that it says is happening on Channel 4 on October 18th, randomly a Thursday.
It appears that it's going to be a live evening possibly similar to Comic Relief.
There's a channel 4 website with more information, and a very nicely animated trailer http://su2c.channel4.com/.
I look forward to seeing how this goes, and to see if they can create a better mix of live entertainment than Children In Need, and even more recent Comic Relief's have done.
Stand Up To Cancer is an American telethon which started only 4 or 5 where stars from each network (NBC, ABC, CBS) come together. I did wonder whether it would be brought over here at some point.
I wish C4 would transmit more old classic movies (or any movies actually) instead of the endless Come Dine With Me-type drudge they air now and have been airing for several years. Their viewing figures must be generally abysmal these days.

Except... I (and I imagine many others) can quite happily sit down for 30 minutes and watch an episode of Come Dine With Me when I get in, before going and making dinner and doing something more productive. Spending an hour and a half watching a classic movie isn't going to fit into that sort of schedule.

Well no, the viewing figures are not abysmal, that's why they continue to air them. Was that not made obvious by the fact that they are continuing to air them and are finding more places to air them?
I'd much rather watch an episode of Come Dine With Me than some old film.

Exactly it's typical forum logic, "if I don't like something, it means no one else does".
Come Dine with Me, is a popular show people can enjoy every night or just watch every now and again. No different to BBC One or ITV1's gameshow offerings.
I think Channel 4's daytime is probably were they are strong and we know what they stand for, it's the evening programming that's lacking big series.
To be fair I suspect it's the numerous two and a half hour "omnibus" editions he has a problem with, not half an hour in the 5pm hour. It seems they're now airing in the early afternoon on C4 every weekday, and I would agree C4 shouldn't be devoting 10 hours+ of it's weekday schedule to Come Dine with Me repeats.
I also agree though the afternoons don't really need messing with at the moment - there are far bigger problems in primetime and really C4 need to work on reclaiming the 10pm-midnight weeknight slot and Friday nights especially before looking at other areas. It's one reason I think Hollyoaks is so safe at the moment despite the collapse in ratings over the laqst 2-3 years - they've basically got bigger fish to fry and don't want to repeat the mistake they made with Big Brother of axing a show but not having the replacements to fill the slots once it had gone.

wasn't the old 6.30 slot filled with US imports which are now on E4? and of course British made shows Games masters which no longer gets made?
Well in the 90s it was generally Hollyoaks 2-3 nights a week, TFI Friday taking the hour on Fridays and drama like Dawson's Creek and Party of Five (which nowadays would be 9pm shows on E4) one a week, with US comedy and the odd UK format the rest of the week. Almost all of that is now catered for on E4, but I would hate to see C4 do a BBC2 and give the 6pm hour over to generic daytime rubbish - and I don't think they could actually as they do still have a legal commitment to serving a younger audience and OFCOM has raised concerns about the age of people watching C4 News - so they're not going to want the shows leading into C4 News being aimed at an older audience.
