Fern Britton replaces the 5pm slot with her new show 'Fern' tomorrow, has there been any advertising for this? I've not seen a promo on Channel 4, which is interesting. I know shes been interviewed about it in various magazines and on The One Show but it doesn't seem to have been drummed up as much as Paul O' Grady was.

Yeah, there's been a promo running all week with Fern talking about how she likes throwing in "shock" questions during interviews to make people think, "Did she really just ask me that?"

They're bloody corny promos arent they Laughing

Corny daytime programme as well, although daytime chat shows tend to be. So far it's a better debut than most similar shows though ...

The set is nice with a different take on a studio audience. I like the defined sections. It will probably be a small hit for Channel 4, it isn't going to pull in spectacular numbers and isn't innovative in any way but I imagine it will do the job.

It did seem a rather small set - and the audience is so small it's hardly worth it. Indeed I tuned in midway through and didn't realise they were there at all until pointed out.

I'm guessing with Cactus producing it is filmed at the same studios as Richard and Judy, which should be noted took some time to find it's feet too.

Fern - C4's BBC promotion machine

Miranda - moving to BBC1
Miranda - on BBC Radio 2 that evening
Jimmy - A farmers life for me BBC2
A few mentions of Strictly, er BBC again

Are you sure this show is on C4 and not BBC?

Jimmy is the latest in a growing line of stars though moving to C4 after they've pretty much exhausted their opportunities for shows elsewhere.

Should be noted no Come Dine with Me in the schedule yesterday - and with the Saturday repeats and Sunday editions, I'm thinking that might be the first day without it in the schedule since the New Year (at least).

Very abrupt ending to Fern this afternoon. She said goodbye and then it just cut to the Channel 4 breakbumper followed by adverts.

The production values for Fern are extremely shoddy. Yesterday there was a part where you could see a camera man stood in the 'doorway' (don't know how else to describe it) and there were wires trailing across the floor, whilst today Fern's voice could be heard speaking over a VT.

I didn't mind the show yesterday but it does seem quite dated and as though it should have been going out at 2pm. They would have been better giving her something along the lines of Sharon Osbourne's ITV chat show because in its current incarnation, it won't do that well.

None of that really matters though, apart from maybe the talking over a VT and that was only for a couple of seconds at the start. Even high cost BBC productions have done the that. It's just a mistake.

Do people really want 'perfect' television though? What is wrong with seeing cables or cameras? We all know how television works, why try to hide it? It's not like it's a drama where you need to suspend disbelief to enjoy it.

I've only seen bits of this programme but I like what I see so far. Is it going to be live everyday?

It doesn't matter if its every now and again but if they mess up at some point in each show then it just begins to look unprofessional. It already looks quite cheap, and seeming unprofessional just makes it look even cheaper. If it was an established show then fair enough, but it's a crucial error to make on a new show when it can still go one way or the other.

Seeing the cameraman in the background was the highlight of this show for me. Laughing

It has had a bit of a sloppy start technically speaking, but that won't make a huge deal. The programme feels quite cheep and cheerful but I think that is more to do with the gimmicky nature of it. I'm pretty sure it will settle down and become Richard and Judy mark II by the end of the series.

Channel 4 just cut to BT Tower colour bars for around 5 seconds when they went to ITN for the (live?) Channel 4 news promo during the break on Fern.

Look out at around 6:50 on Channel 4+1
