Weirdly when visiting my Mum (who has dementia FYI - possibly an explanation), the channel 4 foghorn Ident came and she talked about how scary it looks and it makes her scared every time that she sees it.
It appears Channel 4 has now gotten some copies of the bad HD remasters of The Simpsons episodes. Bart’s Comet is currently being broadcast with the wrong 4:3 DOG, so it appears stretched on SD and in the 4:3 safe area on HD.

Is the show itself still 4:3 (as available on the US Simpsons World) or are they using the godawful 16:9 cropped versions?

Sorry, that’s what I was trying to say - the copy of ‘Bart’s Comet’ shown today was the 16:9 cropped version, but they evidently forgot to change the DOG settings, so on SD the 4:3 DOG was used and appeared stretched, and on HD the 4:3 DOG was used so it appeared in the middle of the screen (like DOGs used to before broadcasters stopped putting them in the 4:3 safe area).
It’s the first time I’ve seen Channel 4 using the 16:9 versions. The episode on beforehand was still an original 4:3 copy.
It’s pretty awful that the only way you’ll see Simpsons episodes on broadcast TV shortly will be with a large chunk of the picture chopped off…
I noticed ITV4 have recently switched to 16:9 cropped versions of The Professionals, The Sweeney and Minder (and they're SD too, not even HD), so it's spreading
It's not just the cropping that's awful about those Simpsons copies, it's the awful faux HD picture processing they've put it through.
And it has been proved, time and time again, that there is *nothing wrong* with showing 4:3 footage on a 16:9 screen - even with black bars on either side.
And if the black bars *aren't* liked, there's always the option of adding a touch of colour - just as the Beeb did when showing Italia '90 clips during this year's World Cup.
