Box set sales were a deciding factor in recommissioning Family Guy. Even now, despite the slight decline in the quality of the writing, FG still has a huge fanbase who pay for them and the merchandise. I wouldn't be surprised if the overseas rights sales are still pretty high too?

And of course FG had a break in its production history when Fox cancelled it and then uncancelled it two and a half years later. That undoubtedly helped the show in the long term, otherwise I suspect it would have just done a Simpsons and just fall through the floor quality wise far quicker than it has done.
