I still find Family Guy to be entertaining, even the more recent episodes but I know Seth Macfarlane doesn't write for the show now, preferring instead to work on other projects but still providing voices for FG.
A lot of younger Simpsons fans didn't grow up during the golden years of the show. There's an entire generation who enjoy the show as the "cartoon" that people like me see it as nowadays, but it's still enough to justify keeping the show on air.
I've always liked Family Guy despite its apparent decline. It divided opinion from its first season, accused of being a show simply consisting of pop culture references and cutaway jokes. It's because of that, in my opinion, that FG has gotten off a little lighter because it's decline wasn't as dramatic as The Simpsons, which was one heralded as being one of the smartest and wittiest comedy shows of all time. It had a lot further to fall and, perhaps, did.

Yet I always find the plots from the early season to be of a higher quality. - FG
And of course FG had a break in its production history when Fox cancelled it and then uncancelled it two and a half years later. That undoubtedly helped the show in the long term, otherwise I suspect it would have just done a Simpsons and just fall through the floor quality wise far quicker than it has done.
I don't think Family Guy was particularly cheap (or quick) to make at least in the early years, though that may be different now as computers probably do the bulk of the animation these days (inhouse I dare say) whereas most of The Simpsons animation was eventually farmed out abroad and AFAIK still is.

Box set sales were a deciding factor in recommissioning Family Guy. Even now, despite the slight decline in the quality of the writing, FG still has a huge fanbase who pay for them and the merchandise. I wouldn't be surprised if the overseas rights sales are still pretty high too?
There's a great Simpsons podcast called 'Worst Episode Ever' which reviews one post 90's episode per show with the aim of ranking the "post classic era" to determine which episode is the worst of the worst. They're 111 episodes in so you've got some catching up to do but the recent 'Kamp Krustier' is currently ranked the worst episode ever.
Electric Dreams got a full screen "Channel 4 Television" endcap (in the All4 style) last night along with Amazon and Sony. Don't see that very often, if at all, but looks far better than just sticking the logo under a small production endcap. (Note it was originally a C4/AMC co-production but AMC pulled out and Amazon stepped in)
If it's after like season 10, it's not worth caring about anyway.
I strongly disagree, the show continues to be great up until the movie in my opinion.
Your be in a minority then I will say there has been TWO great episodes since Season 9. ( personnel 7 was the best and 8 is where rot started but there still some gems)
All I'm saying is that I enjoy a lot of episodes past the supposed arbitrary season 10 cut-off that angry internet commenters say you must never go past, up until season 19-21. It's around that time that for me the show stopped feeling like The Simpsons.
