Father Ted wasn't even that coarse, was it? I know the argument continues over whether or not "feck" is an official obscenity. There was the scene during A Song for Europe when Ted was demanding Dougal to "just play the f**king note". I gathered that was intentionally censored for comic effect.

Language evolves, words like crap are a lot more innocuous than they were 20 years ago.

Indeed. Several uses of crap and even a bare arse made it to screen at 9am this morning on ITV with Problem Child. They still cleverly edited out the use of "bullsh*t" by slowing down the audio and speeding up the video so the sentence started and finished with a perfect lip sync. I can remember them showing it before years ago and it was very heavily edited so nice to see the reigns being loosened.

It happens the other way too, I can’t imagine this clip of Michael Aspel doing the middle finger at 1:10 would make it into such an innocuous trailer now:

There's a scene in Liar Liar where Jim Carrey regretfully recites a lengthy insult to his boss that includes the phrase "pretentious b***ard". ITV decided to cut the audio but leave the visuals intact so it was out of sync until the next shot. Ended up looking more like a transmission problem when simply muting the audio for half a second would've sufficed and been a lot less distracting.

Isn't that the Treehouse of Horror segment where Homer the house toaster as a time machine?
It's also in the Shining parody and the segment where the Springfield Elementary kids are cooked and eaten. "Oh, I'm bad at this..."
There's another very silly Channel 4 edit in season 10's "D'oh-in' in the Wind" - I've highlighted the edited dialogue in bold.
(Chief Wiggum sees Lou spinning dreamily in a chair, a bottle of Homer's hippie drink in his hand)
Wiggum: Lou! Lou, are you all right?
Lou: The electric yellow has got me by the brain banana.
Wiggum: I... see.
(He takes the bottle from Lou's hand, dabs some of the juice on his finger, and tastes it)
Wiggum: My God, it's nothing but carrots and peyote.
Eddie: Damn longhairs never learn, Chief.
Wiggum: (preparing his baton) Eh, it's time for an old-fashioned hippie ass-whomping!
(Next scene shows police vehicles driving up to Seth and Munchie's barn)
Yeah, I can see why the name of a hallucinogenic cactus might be considered offensive...
The silliest Simpsons edit I recall seeing was a Treehouse of Horror episode where there was a running gag that saw Willie get killed with a pickaxe just before he was about to save the day. The pickaxe in his back was somehow deemed too graphic, so they decided to crop and zoom into his lifeless face as he falls to the ground instead.

Airplane! is a 15, last time I saw it on Film4 pre-watershed the scene with the topless woman and the excrement hitting the fan were kept intact which I was very surprised at.
Basically if you enjoy Treehouse of Horror V, don't watch it on Channel 4, it is always butchered, you don't even see Willie get killed...
Channel 4 (or more specifically Film4) have aired what are officially 12-rated films at 7pm, edited out the strongest language and pushed it out as PG. About A Boy is a key example of this and when they've aired the Airplane! film.
The Simpsons trims on Channel 4 have been going on for years, though probably aggravated somewhat by their insistence on airing it at all hours of the day recently.

This is indeed a disturbing universe.
