They're useful if you're in a hotel in the States that doesn't have an/poor EPG system. To be honest it's more about branding your goods, than telling people what they're watching.

Then show it for 10 seconds at the start and end of each part, like Sky does. Doesn't need to be on for the entire programme.

Exactly. That's what they're there for.

Hopefully soon. Never understood why a forum of press fans dislike DOGs so much. A DOG has never ruined the enjoyment of a programme for me.

It has for many of us. For me a DOG on TV is like listening to the radio with someone constantly whispering 'You're listening to Radio 4' every 10 seconds...

You mean like they do on every commercial radio station in the country for a reason?

Because maybe they care about aesthetics ?

I believe Channel 4 is doing well with the second phase of the branding, because it makes MORE sense for the Channel 4 logo to appear, rather than being missing. Having a DOG on the main channel is something Channel 4 has not done in forever, considering that Channel 5, ITV, etc. have been doing it for a while now.

Channel 4 did introduce a DOG (on its DTT and D-Sat output) on Good Friday 1999, it lasted about a month
and has not reappeared until this week.

Funny how it's OK to smear DOGs all over the programmes, but not those oh so valuable (paid to show) ads.
Just saying. Cool

Some channels do, but I suppose on C4 with regional adverts they'd have to individually put bugs on each of their streams

Except if you're Discovery Networks.

Historically one reason adverts have been broadcast DOG-free is to ensure that no legal 'small print' is masked.

I'm sure they would do if, as noggin points out, in the past they hadn't been told off for covering up small print.

Some programmes are also paid for (by subscribers), but you don't see many subscription channels without DOGs (with the exception of film channels).
