I enjoyed Cucumber and I feel that no other channel would have aired it and surely that is the point that Channel 4 are making. Bar their successes with goggle box, 24 hours, undateables, etc. there have been a number of programmes so far this year that I have enjoyed tremendously; Walking the Nile, Cucumber, Raised by Wolves and Indian Summers to name a few.
I do think C4 have a better slate of programming than they've had for a few years but a bit more thought in how things are scheduled is needed - it seems to be they throw stuff on screen and hope it works, or they think they're BBC1 when they're scheduling their big dramas, forgetting that BBC1 and ITV usually have their own at those times. Post 10pm too C4 is pretty poor nowadays with way too many narrative repeats, especially when they've set up a channel especially for those repeats.
Pretty much every area at C4 isn't really doing as well as it should be - they're struggling with drama and comedy to get an audience from the start at a time when drama especially on BBC2 is thriving.
Notice C4 are playing a new (to me anyway) ad about their PSB responsibilities and how advertising allows them to deliver them all for free.
Unfortunately they chose to include clips of the dreadful Cucumber which certainly is not an exactly of quality programming.
Worth remembering these things are subjective - I thought Cucumber was fantastic and it got good reviews, though the ratings were not fantastic. I don't think it's bad of Channel 4 to highlight that they do shows that are a little different to the norm.
Really? I thought it was one of the most appallingly cliched and stereotypical shows in some time and the fact that this was initially held up as being a realistic portrayal of modern gay life was absurd. Once it became clear that we were simply watching the fantasies of Russell T Davies being enacted on screen the critical acclaim and ratings soon dropped (although I concede that the episode with Lance's death was very well made).
There was an amusing moment at the end of last night's Channel 4 News when Jon Snow promoted the network's youth election debate as being on A114, as opposed to All4. Oops.
Jon Snow is prone to little gaffs like that, it's part of his charm. I remember when reporting the British Airways takeover of British Midland, he kept referring to BMI Baby as "bim-ee baby".
C4 not doing themselves any favours by scheduling one of their most promising UK comedy dramas in ages, No Offence, up against arguably their biggest US acquisition of the year, Empire, on Tuesdays at 9pm on C4 and E4 respectively.
Really do wish C4 would stop trying to compete with their dramas at 9pm and push them back to 10pm. They've not really had anything really stick at 9pm to justify them continuing with this strategy, especially when it comes to the sort of shows which traditionally would do well at 10pm.
Empire began last night with a solid but not too spectacular 440k, but it's the sort of show that would rise I think over the season. Indeed it was the only new US show this season (and I think for a few seasons) to see it's audience rise week on week in the US.

Both Channel 4 and E4 have a +1 channel, so there's nothing stopping people watching both. So I don't see the problem.
Haha, he doesn't know the name of Channel 4's on-demand service? What did he think A114 was, a radio station?
He probably thinks it's called 4OD, like most people probably still do. Maybe he thought it was on channel 114? Or taking place in a Little Chef on the A114?
