Can't see them changing anytime soon either, though I think the trailer/sting design could probably do with a refresh (a bit more colour would be nice - something much bolder!). It's been a while too I think since the last ident addition - rather than a complete refresh I think a few more new idents and dropping some of the older ones (and perhaps resurrecting a couple too) would keep it fresh for a few more years.
I liked the original way the blocks formed at the end of the trailers, since it changed it lost something. The end boards for the trailers can look very plain. Perhaps if they were static images of the show/film they were advertising with the 4 logo in a clashing colour or some other form of standing out from it, it could help freshen up the look without changing it too much.
I think the current look for C4 still has plenty of life in it yet. The idents still don't look old or dated, and if they occasionally add new idents like they have done that will help. And they can easily refresh the presentation again if they want to add a new look without big costs.
Maybe just changing the promo end boards would be enough. How about using a different part of the '4' each time. Bit like with the ITV Encore promos which use a zoom out from a different part of the logo, maybe something along those lines. Maybe the '4' logo could swipe or turn across the screen with one part of it stopping in frame with the required information on (name of programme etc), then it could maybe zoom out to reveal the full 4. Hope this vague description makes a bit of sense. I can see it in my head perfectly but its hard to describe! Haha.
Does the TV Forum archive go back as far as the day these launched - would be interesting to see what we thought of them. The search seems to only go back to 2007 (though it thinks everything was posted in 1970!)

It's easier to just do a Google search with the 'site:' function. So a quick search for 'site:tvforum.co.uk channel 4 new year' got this:
Seems I was one of the few to actually like them from reading the first few pages. Also interesting a lot comparing to them to a set of idents on "five" (as it was then) which just highlights how changing your idents every couple of years does you no favours. Even though they had a couple of really decent sets of idents in the five/FIVE era, they were replaced so quickly I can't remember them at all now.
Channel 4 showed 'Night will Fall' tonight, a film about a recently rediscovered documentary shot post-war and previously shelved, with footage from Nazi concentration camps, collecting awful scenes from the camps and putting them together. I must applaud Channel 4 for showing it, and also without adverts - despite being quite harrowing I think it showed itself to be a very important documentary.

Watching this on 4od. Also has no ads. Very disturbing but excellent documentary.
