Did it flop that badly? I thought it was quite popular.

IIRC it started out sub-1m in the overnights and was down to about half of that by the end of the series.

And the second series of Utopia has found controversy already. From Radio Times:

Radio Times posted:
Channel 4 has been criticised by the family of Conservative politician Airey Neave who was killed by an Irish Republican car bomb in 1979.

Members of the late politician's family say that the drama is wrong to use the MP’s killing in the drama which uses footage of the aftermath of his death in a car-bomb attack and has a fictional plotline which suggests that the MP was killed by a secret MI5 cell rather than terrorists.

And here's Channel 4's statement:

Channel 4 posted:
The drama series Utopia is entirely fictional, it is a conspiracy thriller about a fictional organization called The Network. Utopia occasionally blends real moments in history with fictional storylines, meaning some events and characters have been adapted for dramatic licence within the context of the series. It is not our intention to cause offence and Utopia does not suggest that any other real organisation was responsible for the death of Airey Neave. That period in history has been both widely reported and dramatised over the last 35 years and is the subject of many conspiracy theories.

In reality, probably not that many. The impact of online catch-up has been slightly overplayed recently. The percentage increase from iPlayer viewing is significant - but still not huge. I believe 4oD is a less popular platform than iPlayer, so it probably has a relatively small impact.

Hidden away in all of the news about BBC Three going online only was a very interesting stat. Whilst the BBC made a big thing about how many of BBC Three's audience watched on "Catch Up" (around 25%) - implying that a large chunk were watching online, the reality is that the large bulk of the Catch Up viewing is on Sky+/Freeview+ NOT iPlayer.

iPlayer contributes only 4% to BBC Three's figures... (This rises to 8% if you remove acquired content from the figures, which can't be streamed online at the moment. American Dad, Family Guy etc.)

I'd be surprised if 4oD were massively outperforming iPlayer in this regard.

Slightly is an understatement. 90% of TV is still watched live as it is broadcast, and then as you say people opt to record themselves rather than going straight to online.

Don't know if C4 still release 4oD data - I remember they use to big up Hollyoaks as getting something like a quarter of a million viewers a month online, but when you broke it down it only comes to around 10,000 viewers an episode. Online viewing certainly isn't at such figures that is excuses otherwise poorly rated series.

Utopia will be interesting - as I said it started fairly low and only got lower, but it did stand out a bit and I suspect that's why C4 recommissioned it. It could therefore return with much healthier figures than the first series, but I suspect it's just a bit too cult to do anything too special.

Going online and watching programmes on a computer is considerably less convenient than sitting in front of a television and having a transmission centre play the programme for you.

Yet you still have to sit through a heavy amount of adverts before the programme even starts.

Demand Five in particular - even on YouView - is the WORST. The same sequence of adverts before, several times during and after.

Which, if you've recorded it, you can skip through.

I'm not sure what year you sent that message from. 5 years ago yeah, it was a kerfuffle, but I'd say simply tapping an app on my tablet and choosing what I want to watch, and when, is considerably more convenient. The problem is that not all streaming services are equal. I-Player & Netflix are fantastic and undeniably the future of broadcasting. Whereas 4OD & ITV Player are unbearable.
