This is a bit off topic for the main GMTV thread I suppose, so am putting it in it's own for now. Feel free to remove if not suffice mods!
Just wondering who grants the Channel 3 breakfast license to GMTV? How long is the current contract or is it indefinitly ongoing until GMTV runs into real trouble?
Also, if ITV were eventually able to purchase the rest of the shareholding in GMTV from Walt Disney (they currently own 75% of it I think) but decided they weren't entirely happy with GMTV anyway and just wanted the stake for more control of the breakfast slot, could they in theory 'axe' the programme and replace it now that they had the license themselves by default?

The ITC did, back in 1990 - were the licence not to be automatically renewed then ofCom would re-let the licence.

Yes - providing they either complied with the current licence terms, or negatiatd a waiver with OfCom.
Disney's share isn't that significant, ITV could pretty well do what it wanted to anyway. The only serious contraint that might come into play would be SMG getting pissy if ITV tried to put its own branding about. But why would they? GMTV performs relativly well - commercially it wouldn't make sense to tamper with it.
The regional ITV station only holds a licence to broadcast from 09:25:00 to 05:59:59. The time from 06:00:00 to 09:24:59 is a separate franchise held by a national breakfast operator.
GMTV is not a programme, it's a separate service with it's own broadcasting licence awarded by OFCOM in the same way as the regional franchisees.
Until quite recently ago the analogue channel ID would specifically change to 'GMTV' when they were on (this stopped happening on Westcountry in September 1999, from which point it just said 'Carlton' all the time, but reportedly it carried on in other regions for a good while longer). Right into the late 90's there was also a visible hard switch in and out of GMTV at 6AM and 9:25AM as the transmitter changed source.
Although GMTV has to provide regional news it is not bound to take it from the regional operator in that area - for a while (in fact, does this still go on?) GMTV fell out with UTV and stopped using UTV for looking news, setting up it's own 'GMTV Northern Ireland' operation. Presentation changes can also be demanded - with the previous corporate news look south west viewers got astons with 'Westcountry' on them most of the day but 'Westcountry News' during GMTV.
Although ITV plc's huge stake in GMTV means there have been excepetions negotiated, GMTV's airtime cannot be truncated or moved about.

Thanks for that, still quite perplexed at the whole thing though. So if ITV did have 100% ownership of GMTV and wanted to say move their own airtime a little bit to 9am, they still couldnt do this within negotiating a changed license with OfCom?
Stop it with your absurd obsession with Power Rangers. I'm sure 623058 didn't mean it literally, he meant 'cartoons' in the sense of kids' TV in general.

If I'm not mistaken, the analogue channel ID still says GMTV in the Granada region. At least, it did the last time I checked.

You seem to be a bully to each and every recent member who is on the forum. You wouldn't dare to say anything against the long-standing members of course...typical
