I've been watching ABC1 today (the fantastic General Hospital) on Freeview and have seen no sign of ad breaks. Is this a cable only thing?
The ABC1 Xmas presentation is a bit scrooge-like if you ask me. The only thing christmassy in the trailers in the dates of the 25th and 26th sparkling. Absolutly useless. Come on Disney, you can do better!
PS. Bring back the General Hospital omnibus.

Good idea IMO to only air ads within shows, not at programme junctions.
Although ABC1 screening programmes in their original US ad structure was strange at first, I've got used to it now and it makes sense. I wonder though whether these ads will be just at the beginning and end, or also in the middle.
It should also see a cut in the number of promos, so no advertising Home Improvement during, well Home Improvement, for example!

Finaly, someone else who thinks that's how ad-breaks should be handled.

On the whole yes, but remember that programmes on ABC1 (and generally on US and Aussie TV) are made this way.
Anyhow, I'm going to start up another thread on this (EDIT: The structure of ad breaks ), so we'll try and keep this one on topic.

I managed to watch a bit of Moonlighting on ABC1 this afternoon before work, but I actually like their presentation, very original to British TV, the breaks are in an American style, then when the programme resumes the caption appears at the bottom, it is like how Sky One used to be, but very American. I also prefer having the DOG in the bottom right of the screen, it's less distracting IMO.
Though there's not much on ABC1 I'd like to watch which is the main problem, though they're showing some ESPN stuff.

I have a funny feeling that Transmission for ABC1 comes from the same place as The Disney Channel and Five, for DTT the feed is given to the SDN MUX, which again holds Five. Though a rarity for NTL as it is the only non-BBC ITV C4 or C5 channel that carries Digital Subtitles.
I like the idents they are very well done, but it gets on my nerves slightly when they are always shown once every five minutes, I watched Home Improvement on there earlier and as soon as the Opening titles had finished there was a break! Then it came back on, that I can't get used to, but I can get used to the other smaller breaks and when they come back from the breaks they just display the programme name next to the DOG.
It is also unlike other Digital channels by having a DOG in the bottom right hand corner of the screen and it doesn't screw up either, as it doesn't clash when they show some of the extra credits on screen at the start of the programme. (When I mean this I mean when they just have "Directed by...." on it's own at the bottom, something done in the majority of US programmes)
It's also good to see that they state that the Disney Channels are only available on Sky, NTL and Telewest. Might tune in for Nemo in Xmas Day.

Where is ABC1 actually broadcast from and who to? Just the UK? Just seen it on NTL and the graphics are just simply fabulous!

As said above, the ad structure is strange at first but you soon get used to it and find it probably less disruptive than the standard UK structure, although whether they will also put ads in the middle of programmes from next year I don't know.
Agree the DOG works so much better in the bottom right, as do the on-screen graphics with it, but ABC1 need more idents. They only seem to have two, one for comedy, one for drama, despite them having a few more in the first week.

More changes today - but no Christmas idents.
The NEXT, THEN, LATER promo is scrapped.
Instead, the main ident is now longer with a better animation (still starts with those annoying circles though!) and tells us what's on now, next and Christmas Day / Boxing Day. Looks quite nice!
This also means the continuity announcer finally has a new script!
