Earlier this year we had a reworking of the idents for the channel 'Challenge' which included them dropping the question mark.
Now its they have done it again. I first notice it last night whilst watching takeshi's castle, the challenge dog had a red backing (something that previously only happened when it turned over to say next or play along), this seems to be permanent.
Now though they have new idents (only seen one where disco dancing cartoon characters jive with the challenge logo centre and tiny). They also have new breakbumpers which just involve the shape turning around the word challenge, and have a new trailer endboard design that reminds me of entertainment channel 'E!'.
I first noticed the new look this morning while watching Gladiators, yes folks, I was watching Gladiators, but hay, there’s nothing more fun than to wake up at 7am, get ready for work and watch muscled men in Lycra climb up and down a Pyramid …or whatever they do.
Anyway, back to the look, well I think the dog is ok. I do like the red dog, better than the white one, but as for the idents well there nothing short than C**P. The others with rolling dice etc were good for a Gameshow/Quiz/entertainment channel, but the new ones are not really doing it for me. Any yes it is a little E! for my liking. Looks like that Ftn too, with all that red.
I dont get what the new idents are supposed to be.
Looking at the evening schedule thats started this week, there's no gameshows as such just rubbish shows and american imports. I used to enjoy watching Brucie, takeshi and family fortunes, now they've all gone. It seems as if challenge have lost the rules to the game!
I dont think they need a new name, I think they need to go back to their roots. It was doing ok until a couple of months ago when they started to acquire the rights to american shows such as the mole, im a celebrity, guiness world records and that bloopers show.
Hopefully this schedule is a fill in for when the new series of fort boyard starts. I still dont get the theme of the idents. At least the old ones, even though too dark did have a theme of games and challenges.
The line up doesnt suit the channel. So many channel's seem to be going down the same root where they are losing their main focus. I think the only reason challenge has these programmes is because Flextech have acquired the rites to them but dont have anywhere to put them, either challenge or bravo, except bravo is full up of more american imports.
Infact Bravo have a new gameshow, the yes/no gameshow, quite a good format, though they've made it aimed at the bravo audience, it would have worked so much better as a proper gameshow.

Think Challenge started losing the plot a bit when they started buying up stuff like Beadle's About and other items that are much better suited to Saturday Night entertainment. I half expect Blind Date to turn up on Challenge one day under the guise that "its a game show innit, pick one of three, might have a good holiday, might not, excellent, we'll have 1992-1997 please LWT."

Well they've already got Dale Winton's "The Other Half". I'm afraid for me, Challenge is suffering from the UK Gold syndrome, and has become a shadow of it's former self. It's a shame.

They don't seem to want to buy much more in the way of gameshows now, I'm sure they could pick up 'The Generation Game' or something, maybe the Brucie era or whoever did it between that era and when he did it in the first place. Surely there isn't a shortage of game shows and things?
