Wow when they rip out a set they really don't care. All smashed up like that I bet Dave would be sad if he saw that. Guess thats showbiz for you. Also looks like the chairs of the audience have gone to. Looks like the Ed Sullivan Theater will have a complete refit. Mind you i bet it needs it.

I could understand if this was the set of a short lived, ill-fated show where the host had a highly publicized falling out with his bosses at the network, sacked due to a massive public scandal, or simply just poor ratings. But this was an iconic set (since 1996) of a long running and successful series that was hosted by a TV legend.

To completely destroy the entire set and dump every bit of it into a few skips outside the theater is effectively sacrilege! The inside of the Ed Sullivan Theater will now look as though the last 21 years, 8 months, and 3 weeks of TV history never actually happened!

ADDITIONAL:
According to this article, while the rest of the LS set has been destroyed, Dave's desk has been taken away intact.

deathandtaxes ... Dumpster-diving for David Letterman’s Late Show set

The question is, what'll happen to it now? Auctioned for charity ... a museum piece ... shipped off to Dave's house ... or just put into storage until they decide what to do with it! Apparently it's off to the Smithsonian, according to some reporters who were outside the theater. Whether that's actually true or not, remains to be seen.

I'd hazard a guess that Dave's famous desk is being (or has already been) trashed and dumped in another skip.

Hope its headed to the Smithsonian?

You might want to read my post directly above yours. It might actually be heading there after all.

Given that a subway train scale model that used to feature on one of the old backdrops, ended up on display at the Museum Of The Moving Image in Astoria, Queens - makes me wonder why even a small part of this set hasn't ended up being taken over there for exhibit display.

Has any of Johnny Carson's set survived? You'd think if there was any show's set worth preserving, it would be that one.

Blimey, you'd think they'd at least put some temporary tarpaulin with a CBS logo on it in place of the old Late Show logos. Seeing the theater marquee like that makes it look more like an old derelict building ready for demolition!

I suspect the CBS and the Ed Sullivan Theatre signage have gone into storage. I imagine that'll go up once the refurbishments have been completed sometime in August the new Late Show signage will go up along with the CBS and Ed Sullivan signage.

Here's the not so surprising reason the demolition team moved in so quickly

Also, in other US late night news, it's just been announced the seemingly doomed 'Daily Show With Trevor Noah' will debut September 28th.

When was the last time the theatre was upgraded?

That would be in 1996, when the original 1993 LS set was taken down and the current (now mostly destroyed) set was installed.

Having said that, the last REALLY big upgrade, on the same scale of the current refit, was in 1993, before the Late Show moved in, and the Ed Sullivan Theater was, according to Dave on the first show, "We came into The Ed Sullivan Theater, and frankly in those days, this theater was kind of a dump! It was like, big choking clouds of smoke, and standing water. So, obviously it appealed to us right away!"

From 07:20 in on this video of the first ever Late Show.
