I was just looking back at clips of series 1 Catchphrase. Interesting fact in the credits; the original opening titles were made by Electronic Arts, or as they are more widely known as today, EA.

I hear that Challenge had an interesting breakdown last night, during TNA, which just happened to coincide with one of the most violent sections, and the "fault" was fixed going into the next part after an ad break.

Suggestion is that this was a similar ruse to when Channel 4 appeared to fake a breakdown to allow them to drop a sketch from TNT on the night Michael Jackson died

What form did the breakdown take? Blank screen, frozen picture, caption or something else?

Apparently (I didn't see it) the screen went grey followed by an apology caption. This was replaced by an ad break and then the programme resumed after the break.

According to the Sky Programme Information site, Challenge is exactly the same in March (except in the very early hours). Is this it now then?

IIRC the opening titles were done by an unrelated company by the same name - when Electronic Arts (videogames) started trading in the UK they were known as EOA - and later bought the rights to use the name in the UK when the other company went under.

It's all changed a lot since this

I'd forgotten about this era, but Youtube has clips of the Family Challenge Weekend, which predated Challenge TV but was basically the same, weekends only on The Family Channel.

I think they are showing newer episodes of Family Fortunes now too. I am not sure if these episodes have been shown on Challenge before. They have even updated the EPG to call the programme "Family Fortunes - Series 21" on some occasions although the description is still the same generic nothingness for each episode so you never know which one they are going to show.

Series 21 of FF was June-August 2002, the last series of Les Dennis fronted episodes before the show was relegated to daytime telly (Series 22) and then ultimately dumped until Vernon Kay came along.

Challenge have shown Family Fortunes episodes with a copyright date of 2001 on them, this is almost certainly part of series 20, they have the "Smokey Hearts" credits on them. That generic look was introduced in 1999 and the ECPs to go with it in late 2000 and stuck around until the October 2002 relaunch.

Pretty much all Les Dennis episodes of FF are, or have been, shown on Challenge including from 1987. Don't forget the show started in 1980 and Dennis prior to 1987 wasn't the original presenter.

It was upwards of 10 years ago the last time I saw Les' very first series (with the colour imposter of Babbage!) on Challenge.

They've shown the Monkhouse episodes before too, they ran them in 2005, back when that channel actually showed something interesting.
