Crystal Maze 1992 Christmas Special aired tonight and seemed to suffer from video dropout and interference, as well as having an extra ad break shoe-horned in.

Did you see those touch screen monitors - I swear they weren't working right - watch it again next time and see the frustration in the contestants faces as they repeatedly push the monitor screen or stroke it with their finger hoping for it to register! It's the same in some shopping malls nowadays where nothing happens when you touch the touchscreen!

Mind you, touchscreens were probably quite rare and seen as fairly innovative back in 1995!! And those Commodore Amigas being used at the start of the laser run in the Super Round!!

To be fair, Krypton 1995 wasn't all that bad. At the time, it did seem fairly complicated and difficult to follow but watching this rerun for the first time, it makes me realise that the general viewing public were probably a little too critical when it was first aired. It this was put on TV now, it'd be fairly radical viewing and would be better than much of the guff that's on TV now. It's probably being compared to the original Krypton Factors which is why it didn't go down well at the time with the public. If this was programme with a different name so it would be something new, then it probably would have gone down better with everyone!

Didn't I read somewhere that Gordon Burns lost his voice part way through filming this series for some reason and some of it had to be dubbed in later on?? If this was the case, then I didn't notice it tonight.

All in all though, refreshing to see the 1995 series after all this time!!

My nan said during the first two minutes of yesterdays 1995 episode: "I don't like it like this" referring to the assult course and introducing the contestents during it. She also remarked at the beginning: "What's Penny Smith doing on here?!" My nan has always been used to the original series so the 1995 format must be new to her.

I've enjoyed the first three heats in this series so far. Anyone know the music used during the assult course and response rounds?

Notice during the assault course, the cameras are zoomed in a lot more to the contestants. In previous series, you could see all 4 contestants in one shot but this 95 series, you can not. This presentation makes it difficult to see who is leading etc, not that that matters in this new format. There are no Krypton hoardings on the side also like there were in prev years. And there is no proper finishing line either....and they miss the start of the race also...sounds like a disaster...but its not too bad... Laughing . The assault course wasn't going to feature at all but was put in late on as that would been TOO much of a change to the programme.

Talking about Bullseye, does anyone know in what years it would have ended with the animated Central cake endcap?

I think mainly the early 1989 episodes, maybe some 1988 episodes too.

The 1991 Christmas special was on Challenge at 5pm, I can't say I've ever cringed at Bullseye so much in my life.... Confused

I mentioned earlier in this thread that Shooting Stars seemed to be unedited as it was in a 40 minute slot.

Sadly, I have to take that comment back. I noticed that an episode with Wolf from Gladiators (which features on one of the Shooting Stars VHS tapes) included some banter with him and Vic and Bob... only to find said banter not included in the Challenge repeat.

Low and behold, credits roll at just before 10.30 and we get a 35mm Top 10 of the UK and US Box Office. I feel somewhat cheated.

1989 for the most part, but also present on the later 1988 episodes. Central started the trend of animated endcaps in 1988 according to an Archive TV Forum post. A relatively short lived trend because the 1989 ITV Generic Look was introduced in September 1989 which, for all its long-lasting on-screen appearance (or not as the case may be) realistically put paid to the practice because IIRC the 1989 look dictated the style of the endcaps as well.

Watching the first episode of Krypton '95 back; is it possible that the Super Round was filmed in a separate studio to the first part of the episode?

16 years after abandoning the series after the first Krypton '95 episode, the revamped series screams mid-1990s to me in terms of the set design, use of IT, music and graphics - the things I really disliked, then and now, was the CGI animations for the observation round, as well as the confusion of how the assualt course is judged; I guess in those days we were in that era where on-screen clocks/graphics hadn't developed as much in the game show genre as they had in other TV genres.

Annoyingly, my recording of the first episode of the series cut out before the end of the programme, so I'll have to watch some more episodes to give an overall reappraisal of Krypton '95.

Are these ratings good then? Say compared to what Challenge was before it was on Freeview?
