Terrible edit in Saturdays 3-2-1. Mud were performing Tiger Feet and at the end of the song they removed the whole sequence with Les Gray talking to Ted Rogers (probably letting us know their tour dates), the reading of the clue and the viewers competition. Why don't they just put it in a slot that is 5 minutes longer?

I was a little disheartened to see how far they took the editing when it came to FF. It's worse than when they aired an episode of Bullseye a while ago and completely cut Jim introducing the contestants at the beginning, leaving us with the contestants already sitting at their buzzers. I know they'd complain saying it leaves more room for more shows, but I think this editing system should be dropped and extend the timeslots by 5 or 10 minutes where necessary like UKTV. It's a pain, sure, but at least we see the entire episode that they're supposed to be showing.
What good would extending the transmission slot do?
Family Fortunes was originally a half hour programme with adverts. Extend it to 40mins and you'll have copious amounts of fillers all over the place.
UKTV only run things at 40 minutes because the majority of them in those slots are BBC productions - now with forced ad-breaks.
I'm confused. If both the original ITV slot & the Challenge repeat slot are 30 mins, why are they being edited anyway?
(To fit in more ads?)
Which is my original point. Regardless if it were in a half hour or 40 minute slot,
we're getting the same amount of adverts. But in the half hour slot, FF is being edited to make room for them. Say there were 6 minutes of ads allocated to the 30 minute slot, and FF originally had a 2-3 minute break. FF will need to be edited. In a 40 minute slot, there is room for both the 6 minutes of ads and the full episode of FF.
The bottom line is that I'd much rather see the full episode... or the proper title sequence at least.
I'm sure we've discussed this but it's really annoyed me the fact they've butchered the intro to Family Fortunes.* Part of the gameshow is knowing a little about the families surely?

A few mistakes tonight...the CA was repeated twice at the end of The Krypton Factor, advertising the fact that The Crystal Maze Christmas special in on tonight. Also, the announcer said that only 4 Christmas specials had been made so be sure to watch tonight. This is incorrect as in fact 5 were made - 3 with Rick and 2 with Ed.

Off topic, but have you seen the recent BBC FOUR TOTP repeats, where Mud goes 'disco' ?

Quite a 'culture shock' for those who only know Mud for the likes of 'Tiger Feet' !
By the way, why remove the clue reading, if it was relavant to the show?
Couldn't it be cut cleanly, or slap a caption over it ?

Speaking of 3-2-1, not all traces of the TV Times viewer's competition were cut from the episode transmitted this afternoon - between the end credits and the Yorkshire Television production caption, there were a few shots of a portable colour TV surrounded by ceramic Dusty Bins - which were, of course, the prizes given away in said competition.
Would this have been a point when info about the competition was superimposed on the screen, perhaps live from Kirkstall Road? And would whoever was on duty in the continuity studio at YTV read out competition-related spiel at this point?

I guessing it was done for time. The two other episodes I've watched (I've not seen todays yet) had the viewers question edited out in typical Challenge butchery style but the rest of the programme looked intact.
I'm not even sure why they find it necessary to remove the viewers competition anyway, as this was before the days of telephone entry so there is no harm in leaving it in. It would be interesting to see the prize, the entry method (was it just send a postcard to Yorkshire Television?) and just generally how viewer competitions were handled in the mid 80s.

Was just about to ask that very question. Had to do a double take, sadly only caught the very end but oh for those kinder times when the kids lost but were still given the prize anyway!
I suspect that means the kids featured in the specials were all from drama schools.

Michael Underwood was one of the children in tonights Crystal Maze.

No, because my sister's old flatmate was in that episode as well. Apparently Underwood was an idiot. For at least one of the specials, maybe the first two, the contestants were chosen by a competition on The Channel Four Daily.
