Good to see they've bothered to give Challenge it's own website, all be it a conduit for Sky Vegas.

All of Catchphrase up to and including the 1993/4 Family Channel series is distributed by Buena Vista Television (if you can get them to be faffed!). Beyond that, it's all Carlton International/Granada Ventures/ITV I'm pretty sure.

Channel still hold the tapes to Family catchphrase, hence the reason there keep popping up at 5am. Disney should be ashamed of themselves treating TVS archive like crap.

It's not really Disney's fault, nobody really took the time to ensure who owns what was formalised when Family Channel sold erm the Family Channel.

I thought the problem was simply that Disney haven't even catalogued the ex-TVS UK stuff since they believe it has no value? This certainly is the case with Fraggle Rock.

Fox broadcasting, brought over all of Family channel, it seems to be the problem between them and disney, where this all started in 2002.

There still haven't but at least there do admit to owning the tapes. UK Fraggle rock is sitting in ashford warehouse.

I imagine most of the stuff TVS made (which wasn't inherited by Meridian) is. Disney simply are not interested in it - I suppose maybe they don't want to be associated with it? In which case you'd have thought they'd sell it en masse for a peppercorn?

The problem is that in the paperwork has gone missing.

There are certain details that can only be put down at the time the programme was made and no amount of cataloguing by the current owners is going to replace it. Without those details programmes cannot be sold or shown

If Disney could make money out of them then they would be interested, but because there is no paperwork they can't. Even so the value of their programme catalogue in terms of sales is fairly limited, they had a few big drama series but much of it would be of no interest.

Selling the whole thing cheaply is all very well but who would buy it. As an asset it's essentially worthless and the new owner would have to pay for the storage. There is lots of interesting stuff on the subject at the Mausoleum Club, I'm trying to find the thread but there was a quite indepth account of the TVS archive, where it ended up and attempts to salvage some of it

To give you an idea of the sort of paperwork that a programme has, here's BBC Wales' guidelines for their PasC (Programme as Completed) documents, these are documents that have to be produced for every finished programme: http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/info/sites/commissioning/pages/deltv_help_pasc.shtml

Of course not all the details would be needed for a repeat, but the important ones like artist's fees and copyright of third party material definately are. On a site about TVS there is a story of a number of Ruth Rendell episodes being broadcast abroad without the actors being paid. It was only discovered when one of the stars got chatting to some viewers while on holiday.

Did Challenge only ever have the TVS stuff on some sort of legacy license from when Flextech took over The Family Channel? (Which logically would have lasted until 2006/7?)

Or did Flextech renew this at some point?

It really is a pity either way. With the TVS stuff, they'd probably have enough to get away with showing 2-a-day all year round (as they do with Family Fortunes and The Crystal Maze). With what they have, it seems to be less than months worth...

Ahhhhh I see. Could most of this not be extrapolated from the end credits?
