Annoyingly they've censored it so Mr Chips' cane no longer breaks the frame of the bottom square, making the, er, charming, less obvious.

Did anyone get a capture of this nonsense?

How badly was it edited? Challenge haven't exactly got a good reputation for their editing skills.

Not badly at all - all that was shown was the first part of the movement where the cane is by his side. It just doesn't appear when the middle square disappears. The rest of the animation is unchanged.

If anything that edit looks even ruder when all of the squares have gone and Mr Chips is cane-less.

It's not just Mr. Chips' peni...cane that has been edited out. In this version (which I think may be from an outtake show rather than the original broadcast) you see Roy Walker say "Riiiiiiiggghhhtt" yet in the version posted above you hear him but don't see him. There are also other shots that have been changed and I think an attempt has been made to tone down the laughter too. It's actually quite a good edit (technically rather than editorially) which makes me think that maybe it wasn't done by Challenge as they don't seem to be very good at making seamless edits like this. Would Action Time have made two edits at the time or maybe even more recently to make it suitable for Victorians to view?

The first I knew of this incident was when I saw a clip on a Denis Norden programme. I used to watch Catchphrase when it was on ITV and maybe the joke went over my head at the time, maybe I missed this episode or maybe in those pre-YouTube days this was broadcast and just forgotten about. Whatever happened, I don't remember seeing or hearing about this when it was originally broadcast at all. Was there any press attention? Does anyone remember going in to school/work in 1994 and talking with their friends/colleagues about Mr. Chips knocking one out?

Perhaps it was done at the behest of Carlton International in order to satisfy an overseas client?

I think Catchphrase is probably one of the only shows Carlton is fondly remembered for really.

Except it wasn't a Carlton show was it? (Wasn't it an Action Time format originally made by TVS in Maidstone? I have dim recollections of a few TVS shows continuing under the Scottish TV umbrella after they lost the franchise - and Catchphrase being one of them?)

Was that the case with Art Attack and various other Neil Buchanan vehicles?. I don't recall Catchphrase ever being produced for Scottish though.

As you say after 1993 it was 'An Action Time Production/A Carlton Presentation for ITV' wasn't it?

It was Action Time/TVS until they lost their franchise, and from then on it was an Action Time/Carlton production.

It was the Kids Department that went to Scottish television from TVS. The head of entertainment and kids moved to STV in 1992, and took many shows with him.

Carlton Catchphrase stayed at maidstone for a few more years until 1996? when it was moved to Nottingham.

Strange URL it redirects to. Hosted on media.skybet.com and has 2009 in the URL. Also mentions The Krypton Factor which I don't think has been shown for a while.

I was meaning because they'd schedule Prize Time and/or The Games Room around it, and hence had no worry about starting a programme at say 8:50 and the next one at 10:10

Thesedays everything has to start at 8, 9, 10 etc regardless of the fact that they've got 65 mins of content and adverts to fit into 60

Although considering that doesn't bother Sky Atlantic, it shouldn't be an issue for Challenge - and considering The Crystal Maze is usually during daytime they could easily air it at 5.50pm for example. I believe the shows running time started out around 52 minutes, but gradually reduced with each passing series. Nowadays that sort of running time would probably warrant at least 1 hour 10 minutes - possibly as much as 1 hour 20 minutes, with 4 internal breaks - so twice as many as originally, but if done well they should be able to insert them in between the second and third zone and before the Crystal Dome, with relatively minor damage.
