I actually thought Tom Baker was quite good! He certianally plays an eccentric really well, thouh for me it seems he's aged overnight as I've never seen anything with him in post-Doctor Who (obivously there's been 22 years inbetween). I notice the prize money was a lot lower this time. Presumably they're runnign on a lower budget. I'm also wondering why it wasn't made in widescreen........

Well I was never sure how much money they used to get on the Channel 5 series. They always used to refer to them as Gold Dubloons, which they would convert into cash, but they never said if they got the equivalent amount in pounds. What's the exchange rate from Boyards Gold Dubloons to Pounds sterling ?

Well yesterday on a old Channel 5 Ep, The team each grabbed one hand full each (Where as today, they grabbed loads and loads each) and on the Channel 5 ep, That team got £3,190 for bugger all gold. Today they got Loads of it and for only £900 and odd! Well I suppose it’s on a Shoestring budget so, never mind.
All in all, a good show. That Jodie was good, the only thing that was irritating, Was Christopher do dar, Staring at the Camera and saying, "Jack...The door". At Least when Leslie said it, He was not as scary or irritating.

Because Challenge don’t broadcast in widescreen, and as far as we know wont for some time. So if they broadcast in 4:3 they might as well make a show in 4:3. Anyway, if it were made in widescreen, they would show it in 14:9 letterbox. We might as well have more picture with it in 4:3 instead of 14:9 letterbox.

Yes, that did annoy me. He made such a big thing of that line every time, and he delivered it like he was on panto
Yea that annoyed me too- I was not impressed by chris at all I thought he was WAY to friendly, and I am not sure that he knew how the role should have been played. However all in all it was a good, show and I am pleasently suprised.
And on the five show the maximum prise money was £2000 per team, depending on where they came on the leader board.
And does anyone know what is happening with the plans for a new series of the crystal maze?

Most other flextech produced shows are still made in 16:9 and put out in 14:9.
Yes. Don't make the mistake of thinking that they used to give away £10,000 in the olden days - the score you saw was a points score and at the end of the series the teams got cash depending on where they were ranked (with the top team winning £2000 as pointed out).
The new version? I really like it. It feels rawer, more of an emphasis on key collecting (trust me, this is a good thing), Tom Baker is excellent, Chris Ellison plays the Boyard role in a neatly natural way. No, he's not Leslie Grantham but Grantham, although a lot of fun, was very one dimensional in the role and anyone who thought he was anything other than pantomime is a bit wrong.
It's slight rawness means that rather than a huge budget prime time show, it sits really quite neatly as an hours worth of daily adventure.
More than anything, they've learnt things from the French show which is the best version there is. Good work Challenge.

Oh?
Well Are the Camera Crew and all those who film it French, so do French TV Makers still have most stuff in 4:3? The show has got something to do with the French production Team right, but would that determine if it would be 4:3 or 16:9?
Weren't all the C5 series also 4:3? AIUI the programme is made on the Fort in facilities also used to make the show for France, Germany, and other countries. Given that fewer 16:9 shows are made for mainland Europe (apart from drama) - it is likely that the Fort is actually only equipped for 4:3 production. I think the kit is actually quite old - it looked like it was PAL analogue when the programme was on Five.

Pardon the rational thinking but could it be that because most of Challenge's other output is 4:3 due to most of it being pre-widescreen, it made more sense to make it in 4:3? AFAIK there's only the adverts and the "Soap Addicts" programme (and probably Defectors as well) that's shown in 14:9 on Challenge - everything else just won't use it unless they start cropping...
