I still say Challenge will be closed by the end of 2021.

There are just too many things to suggest that it doesn't have a lot of time left. And that includes Sky seeming unwilling to negotiate the rights to more episodes of shows that aren't The Chase, Bullseye and Family Fortunes (much as I like these three).

Challenge show same thing week in week out... channel must be closing.

Challenge show something "new" (well, not shown that often)... channel must be closing.

Well, I could be proven completely wrong and it continues broadcasting for many more years, no matter how well Sky treat it. (And, of course, they could also decide to sell it rather than close it.) Wink

At this moment in time, however, it genuinely does look like it's not long for this world. Feel perfectly free to think that this is utter sloblock. Wink

You could argue that the fact the Sony Channel now run Millionaire episodes themselves without needing them to license it out to anyone else (admittedly only from early 2001 (just around the point Dave Edwards became a millionaire) to 2007 with the People Play live clock episodes in 2011) suggests that rights holders may just run their content themselves on their own channels. Admittedly, that's just one channel and isn't indicative of anything, but it does show where rights holders want to show their content and perhaps Challenge is just not part of that any more.

For someone like Sony, running Millionaire on your own channel is probably far cheaper than selling episodes to someone else. Because you can set up a slot and run them as much as you want and not care at all if it makes no money, because you're not licensing it to anyone else, it's your own content so its effectively just free advertising for your brands.

Having said that, I don't know much about what Challenge shows in regards of Millionaire content any way, perhaps they show episodes that Sony aren't yet showing? A quick glance of the schedules shows Sony showing Millionaire from 9pm to 1am and Challenge just have one episode a day in a 10pm slot.

Just noticed Challenge are showing the last series of Play Your Cards Right (series 16)
Has this ever been on there before?

I think it appeared during the arse end of the Virgin era.

My mistake just realised the episode was from series 15 (1999). Don’t get why it has series 16 in the description

Briefly coming out of retirement to put my neck on the line and say: Challenge will be closed by the end of 2021.

As well as old shows being broadcast in completely the wrong aspect ratios (as Neil says, quality control seems to be non-existent now), the number of hours of The Chase clearly isn't decreasing, while the Weakest Link has joined the long list of shows to be dropped like a hot potato (or so it appears). And it's not exactly a demonstration of love for the channel either, is it, if there are considerably more promos for other Sky channels, programmes and services on it than there are for the channel itself and *its* programmes?

I also doubt that closing Challenge would cost Sky many customers, or leave a significant hole in their finances...

I'm not saying you're necessarily wrong in your prediction, but the 'wrong aspect ratio' issue has been going on ever since Challenge went widescreen under Flextech ownership. In fact there was a 6-monthish period a few years ago where all content was being stretched to fill a 16:9 frame.

I think the truth of the matter is that Challenge has not been a priority for Flextech/Virgin/Living TV Group/Sky for a very long time. That said, Sky put a reasonable amount of effort in with variety of content and strands... but eventually found that The Chase was such a ratings banker that it was hardly worth putting that level of effort in.

I was convinced that Virgin/Living TV Group were lining the channel up for closure in 2010 (and they might have been, at that point there was no trails, no new content and for a while not even any spoken continuity), then just a year later we were suddenly treated to Blockbusters, 3-2-1, Stars in their Eyes, The Krypton Factor... loads of content not seen on there in years.

Just seen a trailer for Challenge with someone doing what I presume is meant to be a Matt Berry impression... a very, very bad one.

Just seen a new trailer for Saturday Stacks on Challenge. Seems to be the most effort they have put in to a programme trailer for the channel in some time.

Didn't they do Saturday Stacks last year?? (probably called either that or weekend/weekday)?

They’ve used that name (and similar ones) in the past, for example, there’s a promo from early 2016 that uses the name “Saturday Super Stacks”:
Can I have your attention please?
