As I understand it, the title rotates around each EU country, one a year.
So this year it is Ganz in Austria.
Each country knows when it is on the rotation and has to choose one of its cities to be the "capital". The last time this happened in the UK was with Glasgow in 1990 (I think it was 1990, anyway). So by 2008 the rotation will have come around again and it'll be Liverpool.
Cardiff did bid, but lost out... the other ones were Newcastle and Gateshead (joint bid), Bristol and Oxford.
What Central News did with those astons, to go back to the original subject, was meant in jest, I'm sure!
Well I'm sorry but this really shows the midlands up in their true colours. For Central News to put up "Anti-Birmingham" minister just demonstrates how unprofessional they really are. They should remain objective to reporting the facts, even if its a decision that goes against the region. Simply because Tessa Jowell didn't pick out Birmingham, doesn't make her Anti-Birmingham or Anti-Cardiff, Anti-Newcastle or Anti-Anything Else, fact is there could only be one winner. Just how self indulgent is this region to turn it around into some kind of personal vendetta ?
What a shame they couldn't have been magnanimous in defeat towards their rivals. Poor form. Midlanders need to wake up and realise that the world does not revolve around them.
Here, here. I agree with you totally, Square Eyes. It is very unprofessional. Because everything usually revolves around London, and then after that Birmingham is "the 2nd city", anywhere further north doesn't get a look-in. I'm therefore glad that somewhere northern won, and that it wasn't Manchester (I've nothing against Manchester, it's just that - north of Brum - Manchester is the "obvious" place; kinda like "the 3rd city", if you will)
And so speaks I, a midlander (I Iive near Coventry).
By the way, I'm not totally clear how this European Capital of Culture thing works. I take it one place from each EU country is picked, rather than one for the whole continent????? (Because I can't imagine that any UK place would win if it were continent-wide).
Also, is it Liverpool for the whole UK, or is there also a Welsh, Scottish and NI winner? It's seems a bit sh*tty that somewhere in England should win for the UK, as usual. I feel sorry for the other UK nations always having to play second fiddle.
for your information , the last time a UK city held the title - it was in glasgow - so that blows your "england centric" theory out of the water.
i think perhaps you are suffering from a severe case of humour phobia mr unsound.
It doesn't come over as humour, it comes over as sour grapes.
im taking it you watched the edition of central news at six in question? otherwise one might not be able to make that kind of judgement - not being able to put the whole name caption "scandal" in context ...

It's
08453 009956
!!
The last 3 figures seem familiar !!
YAY @ Mike doing WM brekky - as Mike himself said it's almost worth getting up for.
Interesting about the new phone number for WM though - I will miss the old phone number in a way. Sounds a bit silly but you just can't forget it from the old days of WM # Oh Two One...Four Three Twoooo Twoooooo Thousand #
I assume the new number is to be kinder to the listeners outside Birmingham and the Black Country. So they can phone at a standard local rate rather than having to pay that bit extra to make the Birmingham call.

unless its to smooth the transition to the mailbox? perhaps it might be possible to transfer the 432 XXXX numbers to the city centre - but i would imagine it'd be easier to use a non-geographic number at both pebble mill - then the mailbox.
I can think of at least 3 versions of the phone number jingle.
There was the quick one - '021 432 2000'nd', heard by yours truly mostly during Doolan.
There was a slower one used at least during the John Taynton era of the 'Late Show' - ' 021 432 2000 'sand ' !(slightly echoely)
& '0121 432 2000 and' (apologies, but how would you write these down !)
Any ideas when the Late Show swopped to a local rate number?
I think it was when Gordon Astley took over in 1996, when it became 0345 023231 - 'Ever phoned through to a radio station' etc.
It then became either at the later Astley era, or the beginning of the Waddo & Julie era, 0345 445545, then later still 0845 3039303, into the Alex Trellinski era onwards.(Obviously WM listeners reverted back to 432 2000 when Shabina invaded!)
Which BBC stations have local rate numbers now?
I can think of WM & Hereford & Worcester for two!
Anyway, for benefit of 'Tiswas' fans, today on Doolan, he had the now grown up kid who used to sing 'Bright Eyes' , while dressed in a rabbit suit, on the phone, & he's now a fireman in Staffordshire!
Next week, it's the other side of 'Sally James', next Sunday 10am !
oh and for mr lovelight's pleasure, david gregory seems to have returned to pebble mill - looking at a BARB box today. is he science or environment corespondent now i wonder?
oh and i saw that DSAT promo on central west for the first time today "viewers in the east and south midlands should press TV and 3" or something. it looks totally naff - and sort of highlights what an awful studio central west have compared to central south when wes pops up on the screen.
i wonder if its possible to to play it out only on the DSAT feed only - or is the DSAT feed the central west DTT feed?
