This evening's Central News at Six (West) is being presented by Joanne Malin and WESLEY SMITH!!!
Has Wesley moved from Central News (South) or is he just filling in for tonight because neither Bob Warman nor Llewella Bailey are available? (both off sick?!?!)
Who's presenting in the South Midlands this evening?
CN
Central News
Just filling in for BOB for a few days as he said just.
SL
Stephen Lee
Wesley's filling in because by a quirk of the rotas all the other programme presenters who'd normally stand in are off.

Towards the end of the show, Joanne interviewed Des O'Connor.
The (pre-recorded) interview was done in the 'waiting area' of the Carlton Gas Street building, just in front of the reception desk
The reception desk did not come into shot at any point - it was off to the right (from viewers' POV) of Des.
They were sitting in a corner (i.e. if the back of Joanne's head was facing north, then the back of Des' head was facing east). The window behind Joanne is the front of the building, the window behind Des is one side of the building. This area is literally
ten seconds
walk from the door of the ground floor studio that houses Central News.
I know all this cuz I've been there!

i think they could use that area for a daytime regional show - like pebble mill at one - as the GMG regions have a local lunchtime show.
Wow - our Wes finally makes the big time! Just as long as he doesn't leave Central South though - wouldn't be the same without him!

Wesley explained that he's filling in for Bob Warman for a couple of days. He also mentioned that he originally started out on short bulletins of CNwest, and was last seen on it about 12 years ago.
Am I right in thinking that CNsouth launched in the early 1990s? That would mean that the area currently covered by CNsouth was once the southern half of CNwest's patch. Presumably that's why Wesley disappeared from the Birmingham show 12 years ago - to go and present in Abingdon!
That orange wall with a CARLTON* logo on it (behind Mark Boulton and Darts player) is the wall behind the reception desk of Carlton B'ham.
The CN@6west opening titles were not altered to account for Wesley's presence. The usual titles were used. The usual titles feature Bob Warman, then Joanne Malin, then Llewella Bailey.
Even though it is only a combination of TWO of these three people that present on any one night, ALL THREE are shown in the titles EVERY night. So the titles are always a bit misleading, therefore the fact that Wesley's presence makes the titles even more inaccurate is no great loss.
Who's on CN@6south whilst Wesley's in B'ham?

Yes, Central News South is basically a big slice at the bottom of what used to be an absolutely enormous Central West region. As Central South launched when I was only about 9 years old, I can't say I remember Wes doing bulletins from Birmingham. But I do remember that, in the early days of Central South, only the evening programme came from Abingdon - short bulletins came from Birmingham as before.
Wes is an absolute legend in my home area (along with Anne Dawson - they've been presenting together for more than 10 years since the launch). I couldn't say who's been covering for Wes, as I'm in France, but it's normally a really ugly fat bloke whose name I can't remember!

So before CNsouth came into existence, you couldn't really describe the west and east parts of the central region as 'halves'. The west would have been much bigger than the east (about 2/3 of the whole region, whils east was 1/3 ???), with it's southernmost point much further south than the 'east's' southernmost point. But now the THREE sub-regions are presumably relatively equally sized.
The BBC should take a tip from Central/Carlton. Their (west) Midlands region is somewhat bigger than the East Midlands to this day - so all that stuff about different southernmost points
still
applies in the case of the BBC.
Oxfordshire should break away from South Today and its opt-outs, pinch a few bits off other regions (Herefordshire and north Gloucestershire from MidsTdy/PtsWst) and become a fully fledged
South Midlands Today
region!
Then the way that the Midlands is divided up will be about the same on both BBC and ITV, instead of one channel dividing it into
three
whilst the other sees fit to only divide it into
two
.

i agree - its a heavily populated area too - ie the oxford area. the bits that w.midlands today covers in the south are rarely mentioned (not that im complaning) and have very little in common with birmingham and the westmidlands county.
midlands today should only cover shropshire, staffs, w. derbyshire, w. leicestershire, warwickshire, west midlands, worcestershire. - just like central news
couldnt they just upgrade the oxford optout in south today into a completely seperate region with the addition of areas of w.midlands today - for regional news, and for other regional programmes each transmitter take feed from birmingham nottingham london bristol or southampton - depending on where is more relevant (i know there arent 5 transmitters - but you know what i mean)

People all over the rest of the Central West area get fed-up with Birmingham coverage all the time.
I would like to see the Central region split to different regions for news:
Birmingham, and most of the West Midlands (county)- from Central News West.
Staffordshire, Shropshire and Derbyshire- from the Wrekin transmitter and Lichfield etc.
Hereford and Worcester, Gloucestershire- currently part of the Central South region
Warwickshire, Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and Nottingham- currently part of CN East region
Lincolnshire, Peterborough and East Coast area
Currently the Central NEWS regions are
'West'- from Birmingham
SHROPSHIRE, STAFFORDSHIRE, WORCESTERSHIRE, SOUTH AND WEST WARWICKSHIRE, BIRMINGHAM AND WEST MIDLANDS.
'East'-from Carlton Studios, Nottingham
LEICESTERSHIRE, NORTHAMPTONSHIRE, NORTH AND EAST WARWICKSHIRE, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE, SOUTH LINCOLNSHIRE AND DERBYSHIRE.
'South'- from Abingdon, Oxfordshire
HEREFORDSHIRE, NORTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE, OXFORDSHIRE, WEST BUCKINGHAMSHIRE, SWINDON, AND SOUTH NORTHAMPTONSHIRE.
Where I live is a CN West and CN East overlap area.
