Reminds me of one of Central's slogans "Your at the heart of ITV" Hope that wasn't the start of Granada doing those cr@p Heart idents from 1998 Very Happy

I can almost hear the mighty Ted May reading those words over a nice cake animation. Those were the days.

Also when Carlton owned Central, the licence was still owned by Central Independent Television as a subsidiary of Carlton plc. This is why the Central News name couldn't be dropped.

Is that correct? I always assumed it was purely for branding reasons that ITV kept the names "Central News" et al.

If so, you learn something new every day!

No, that's nonsense. After all, 'HTV News' is no longer, and equally there's nothing stopping ITV rebranding Central News as 'ITV Midlands News' or even 'Bob's Big Birmingham' if they wanted.

They've kept Central News because it's a well recognised name with which viewers identify.

But HTV News was a well recognised name as well - HTV kept the name HTV News for 15 months after the channel was rebranded ITV1 Wales, however once the news was rebranded in line with other regions it would have been stupid to have called it ITV HTV News.

oh it's obvious why they changed it

HTV - ITV
Central - ITV
Tyne Tees - ITV

See what I'm getting it?

If it was still Harlech it would probably still be called that, but ITV and HTV are too similar.

Did I imagine it, or did I read/hear somewhere the legal name changed to Central Broadcasting at some point in the 90's?

Nope...if you take a look at Companies House (www.companieshouse.co.uk), Central broadcasting is a dormant company whilst Central Independent Television Ltd is active.

The legal name of the franchise holder has never changed. Carlton allowed Central Broadcasting Ltd to take care of the running of the midlands franchise, but Central Independent Television plc continued to hold it.

The only legal change which has ever been made to the franchise holder's name was when it was changed from a plc to a limited company in 2003.

At present, Central Independent Television Ltd continue to hold the midlands franchise for what OFCOM term 'ITV (Channel 3)'.
