But how many viewers does a standard Big Brother daily round-up get, it's usually still a BBC2/Channel 4 type viewing figure isn't it?
About 3.5-4.5m. That's actually about what a lot of ITV shows get for the timeslot these days, perhaps alarmingly.
It's interesting really, Survivor could happily draw in 6m on an average night and be declared a flop, but ITV would kill for a regular audience of that size these days, I'd have thought.

Survivor was one of ITV's best 'reality' formats in my opinion. Great locations, interesting concept and challenges without just dropping bugs on 'celebs' .
It was hyped up massively, then appeared to under perform and so was axed. It seems to me, ITV just didn't like it, because it didn't have enough earning potential for them. The fact it was all pre-recorded, with no viewer evictions and premium rate phone numbers basically sealed it's fate. If they'd stuck with it though, it could have become their 'Big Brother' and returned annually.
Reality TV if done well, doesn't have to be on every night of the week, have viewer interaction, and premium rate phone lines. My case in point is the Apprentice, once a week, no viewer interaction, but brilliant TV.

Oh I agree. Survivor was endlessly rewarding on the proviso that you could get past its slightly baffling pacing - having watched some American episodes before our first domestic competition started, I was completely thrown by how slow it seemed. Worth sticking with, though. And the spin-off books are probably my favourite reality game tie-ins, as they feature loads of behind the scenes stuff.

I agree that Survivor was one of the best reality tv series. However although it was considered a flop ITV did commission and screen a second series in 2002, but this was on once a week at about 10pm on a Wednesday. After that they seemed to dump it in favour of Im A Celeb Get Me Out of Here which began in August that year.
