Warwick Davies to present? (January 2014)

Well we don't know do we, though after the reviews of the pilot I was surprised it proceeded with him. Can't say I'm a huge fan of him personally but it is great to see ITV not opting for the usual suspects. Indeed it seems we are beginning to see the return of comedian fronted game shows (not that Warwick is a comedian though), and that can only be a good thing.

Yeah I was questioning him because of the pilot but was mainly getting at how Corbett apparently wouldn't be good enough but Warwick is.

I think he might actually be good.

Corbett isn't in Monkhouse's league.

What makes you come to that conclusion?

Ronnie Corbett is an outstanding comedian/performer and is possibly one of the UK's best loved funny-men of all time. His comedy may differ to that of the late Bob Monkhouse, but his character and wit would be perfectly suited for Celebrity Squares. I also think he's one of the few older comics who would appeal to that ITV audience range.

Another name to throw in the hat would have been Michael Barrymore if he was still on our screens today.

I suppose it depends what sort of Celebrity Squares you want. Ronnie Corbett would be good for a slow moving daytime version but for a loud fast moving prime time one he'd be totally the wrong choice.

That said, I don't think Warwick Davies is the right choice for that either

Just seen a promo for it and it starts on Wednesday at 8pm. Thankfully it's not the usual Saturday or Sunday...

The 1993 revival also aired mid-week before Corrie, I seem to remember.

Celebrity Squares was never really a fast moving programme first time around... Certainly the UK version wasn't as 'loud' as the US version.

I still think Corbett would have been the best choice, his gameshow presentation on Smalltalk shows that.

The 70s version was very loud and brash and American for its time.

Ronnie Corbett is fine for cutesy granny pleasers like Small Talk but wrong for big budget flashy Saturday night shiny floor shows.

He's 20 years older now and reports (subsequently denied) earlier in the year suggested he wasn't in the best of health.

Not quite sure where this Ronnie Corbett obsession here has come from.

I've always thought Corbett to be more of a comedy panellist than a comedy gameshow host. Bob Monkhouse hosted around a dozen notable game show formats; Corbett has hosted one. In terms of hosting gameshows, they're not in the same league; that doesn't reflect on their comedy, however.

Didn't seem himself at the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony either.

I think Warwick will be fine, we'd all be moaning if it was the usual rota of Mulhern, Kay, Schofield etc... providing he's able to ad-lib, and I think he is, it'll be great.
