I don't think he did any damage to his core audience by doing so much anti-Trump material, the opposite in fact.

But is THATS CBS core audience, because if its not, this is where all these rumors have come from?

Is current audience Stephen gets, the actual demographic CBS wants?

I give it to him, when he stays off political stuff and like the above his great but add in this election and he dire.

I have to disagree, the items he did on the election were probably the best of any of the late night shows. He has the advantage of being able to go in depth into explaining and investigating a subject in depth rather than just the 5 minutes that Colbert gets or the 8 mins that Seth Myers does or the interrupted 15 mins on The Daily Show.

OK so the Drumpf stuff was a bit click-baity but his was certainly the only place I saw go into the feasibility one of Trumps main policies - the border wall. No one else I saw explained the logistics of it and the actual practical issues on the ground.

Other analysis pieces were excellent too

Of course maybe not a big enough profit, Wink He wasn't making anything he would have been pulled within weeks. I give it to you about that wall .

It is actually. The reason it's deemed to be failing is because it doesn't have as much viral buzz around it as Fallon/Kimmel/Colbert which is nuts but that's the business now. Last Week Tonight is good but overly preachy. It can be a hard slog to watch, it's the comedy equivalent of eating your vegetables.

I've tried watching The Daily Show and seen clips of Last Week Tonight but it always feels a bit too much like preaching to the converted. Some of it's funny but as a whole it doesn't seem necessary for me to watch everything they put out.

I hope the CBS exec who took a gamble on Corden got a pay rise.

Late night isn't suppose to be political, its suppose to be fun and easy going.

The monologues are always topical though ("Have you seen this? Have you heard about this?"), and Trump's candidacy has been the main dominant news topic for months now. For him to not mention it, and aim to create nondescript "fun" would've been totally bizarre.

EDIT: I do miss some of Stephen's spontaneity that always shone in some of the taped "reports" with oddballs on TDS and The Colbert Report, back in the day. Even his safe humour is funnier when he can just be himself - some of the clips of him taking calls on the turkey helpline for The Late Show were pretty funny.

As for satire, Sam Bee on TBS is just great, full of passion and she just lets rip. I could tell from one of the first reports, A Jeb in Winter, it was going to be good.

Personally, I find John Oliver good, but a bit preachy and whiny for my taste.

I wonder if there is a break clause in the contract, I imagine after the Conan debacle Colbert could leave CBS and not cost them too much to let him go.

I do think it would be risky putting Corden at 2335, he's too similar to Fallon. I do wonder who was on CBS' shortlist before they went for Colbert, Jon Stewart was mentioned and I think Neil Patrick Harris.
