Anyone know if CBBC's digital channel is the worst culprit for recorded links? I usually watch Chucklevision at lunchtimes and some of the links are ALWAYS recorded! I mean I heard one referring to "half term holidays" earlier on and that was done about 2 weeks ago! What also makes it interesting is when the two live presenters who are on are not the two featured in the recorded link, or when its the same two people and on every link they seem to be wearing different clothes!

Now, also, they've made the CBBC presenters wear poppies - what would be interesting is if one of the live links was recorded while the presenters were wearing poppies and maybe in a couple of weeks or so, when the link is played out again, they will be wearing poppies when everybody else has taken theirs off! LOL!

So, recording links and then keeping them for about 2 weeks can be rather dodgy sometimes!

Yes, the lunch-time links on The Channel are recorded, usually on a Monday or Tuesday morning.

Poppies in future weeks shouldn't be a problem because CBBC presenters only started wearing them last Wednesday!

Several reasons, but mostly because Xchange and Nelly Nut both come from TC2 and need to rehearse during that time (and do some pre-rec in the case of Nelly).

How does Nelly Nut work? I was under the impression it was done live... but how do they make the character work - I mean if the voiceover says 'Wooooooooh' then Nelly's lips pout. I remember Cartoon Network doing a similar 'Johnny Bravo at Breakfast' style show.

Anyway, I don't like Nelly Nut. It's boring to watch and all the people win is a mug!

But there are callers who also make character voices move and the presenters on CBBC often talk to Nelly. Surely it'll be similar to those virtual people Stephen Cole *swoon* is always flirting with on Click Online.

You'd be a mug to watch it! LOL!

How does a computer generated animation come from a studio? Unless it's a computer system in the gallery that's attached to TC2? (haven't been to TV Centre since about 1994 so it's been a while!)

I presume the reason why Nelly Nut and Xchange have to use the same studio is because of this technology which I think is the same that's used for these new "X-heads"... Interesting bit of technology really, especially when the computer can't quite get the lip movements right! lol!

The key word there was "some" - the majority of it is done live, but for the 20 minute 6.40pm show there are too many locations to do it all live. The bits where they go time travelling are pre-rx during the day. The rest is done live.

Is Cbeebies recorded when BBC One/Two is in there, or are the One/Two links recorded, or are all the links recorded?

It's quite a complecated set-up, Nelly is directed separately as it has it's own computer software (v clever stuff), it is a single source on the vision mixer in TC2.

X-heads is totally separate and nothing to do with Nelly.

If you want more info on X-heads, PM me - I had to write a lot of the guidelines on how it's used and stuff.

Whilst we're on the subject of the hyperactive computer animation... Just when you thought she was a BBC exclusive! It appears she has worldwide fame!

Google Search results for "Nelly Nut"

Apparantley she can be seen in places like Denmark, France and Israel!

this article looks rather interesting!

All the links for Cbeebies Channel and CBeebies on One and Two are recorded.

They have their own dedicated studio - TC0 (zero) which is a "four-waller", in other words a studio space without gallery. They use professional camcorders in the studio and then edit the links together.

TC0 got it's name because it used to be the experimental "Virtual" studio, where a virtual set could be designed and the real bits superimposed on top. The clever part about this (as opposed to straight ChromaKey / CSO Blue/Green Curtian) was that if the cameras moved within the studio, the computers generating the 'set' re-rendered the set accordingly in real time, making it seem much more real. There weren't many uses for the studio though with that rig (although the technology is still used occasionaly as required), so TC0 became s four waller. The old network production studios at Pebble Mill are also used currently as four wallers for the production of "Doctors". They shoot a great deal of Doctors in and around Pebble Mill. What happens to "Doctors" when PM shuts, I don't know though! Anyone know?
