I remember Ratz, I didn't think he did much non-Live and Kicking CBBC work. Also after Ratz and before Otis I'm sure there was a tramp person called 'the anorak' who was always saying 'iiiiiiii know' and was really annoying. I don't think he was on for very long though. Does anyone else remember him? He must've been mid 90's.

Speaking of on screen puppets etc, can anyone remember the butler (?) who used to appear with Andi Peters in the Broom Cupboard? What was he called? We only ever saw his arm....http://web.ukonline.co.uk/tv.home/forum/emoticons/confused.gif

Actually it was Wilson the Butler. Andy Crane with Edd and Wilson - now those were the days, but still not as good as Phillip Schofield and Gordon the Gopher!

Scarily there are some of us here who can remember the days when there was no broom cupboard...

For a while before Philip Schofield arrived there were BBC Micro animated graphics sequences between the programmes - in fact Blue Peter had a competition for its viewers to design their own one I think!

Some of the funny things in the early broom cupboard days was when the broom cupboard had to say goodbye to viewers in Northern Ireland or Scotland(?)(as they still had their local news BEFORE the Six O'Clock News rather than at 1830 like the rest of the UK) You'd then see the broom cupboard presenter say goodbye, only to hear them voice the BBC One blue and gold globe (COW) to read into Neighbours... Occasionally, if there had been guests and it had been really funny, Andi Peters would lose it and giggle all through the 'serious' BBC One announcement.

(Another nice and sad anoraky thing was that there was an in-vision monitor showing the VT clock for the next programme - and you'd see it run from a 5 or 10 so you'd know when the next prog was about to start!)

And of course, an Archimedies was used to create some later ones - the kind of thing a sad RISC OS freak like me finds very interesting! I'd love a copy of the programmes used for both the BBC Micro and the Archimedies CBBC logos - straight BASIC programmes, assembler, or something more complex...?

Yes, I remember those, used around 1984-85; pity there are hardly any examples on the internet, only this one from the Meldrum Homepage: http://www.meldrum.co.uk/mhp/identzone

I seem to remember the ones that won the Blue Peter competition (and were subsequently used on air) were a lot better than the BBC-designed ones! The first Children's BBC ident in September 1985 was also generated by a BBC Micro.

And then in even earlier days, there was no attempt at special children's presentation - just the usual BBC1 globe and announcer - except for special programme slides with balloons on them, and a menu which ran for two minutes with music before the first programme (Play School) came on at 3.55 - although I later discovered this was only in the South East whilst other regions had their regional news!
