The LGBTQ storyline from Jamie Johnson has been getting media attention, on BBC Breakfast yesterday, and one of the top stories on the BBC Homepage today.

I don’t know if there is a reason, but in CBBC HQ when they talk about the storyline I have noticed that they are avoiding actually saying ‘gay’ .

I don't know how far we've come in the past eight to ten years on this stuff in schools but 'that's gay/you're gay' was still a common playground insult. Might be concerned about the story not getting through to youngsters because of using a word that's often (wrongly) used as an insult among kids rather than it's general meaning among adults.

Any kid told "you're gay" should just respond with "yes I am happy, thanks"... gay didn't always mean homosexual.

How about responding with “yes I am gay, there is nothing wrong with that in 2020”?

Because if you are not homosexual and the word is being thrown around as a casual insult, that response probably won't help matters.
Write that down in your copybook now.

It still is. Surely the point of a storyline like this is to educate the audience about what being gay really means.

Have you ever been a 14 year old? That*s sadly still a surefire way to get bullied.

Pretty sure breathing as a 14 year old will get you bullied from what I've seen.

Sadly yes. There are still many teenagers who think it is ridiculously uncool to like people of the same gender as themselves.

A certain football match has prompted discussion of Byker Grove's ending:

Is there any video of this episode from 2006 on the interwebs?

Interesting you can’t swear on TV Forum but you can’t embed a tweet that includes swearing.

I watched the final series of Byker Grove and it was as bizarre as that tweet makes it out to be. In fact if you go back to the TVF thread at the time you can find me talking about it. I remember wondering why it wasn’t more talked about given the strange transformation from drama to science fiction.
