I suppose the ending of the 2008 version was all that they could include as the rest of the tune was the wrong tune.

Just had a chance to catch up with the 5000th episode of Blue Peter and the first one I've watched in over 10 years, I think. I'm not a massive fan of how the studio vibe is these days - it's all a bit Big Breakfast with the crew shouting things out. I preferred it when it was more sedate, but I suppose that ship sailed with the September 2007 revamp.

Here is that first link of the post-Marson era - oh dear!!:

Richard Marson speaks of his disappointment at seeing that show in his new book. He spends the years of his editorship trying to avoid that kind of "yoof" style presentation, only see it be embraced wholly the moment he's gone.
To be fair the final years at TV Centre saw a marked improvement, but that 2007-8 run was pretty rotten.

It kind of says it all for that era of the show that they managed to get the actual theme tune to the programme wrong.

As it was around the time of the 50th anniversary I remember that they did a red button quiz with John, Peter & Val and the new presenters, every question gave a multiple choice and a time limit, the then New but incorrect theme played over the time limit of every question.

I like that approach for the theme and look of the show and I believe that the introduction of Joel & Helen was a good change for the programme.

I understand what you mean about the crew these days but I don't think it's that bad as a programme, a lot of it has moved back from what it became in 2007 in my opinion.

Watching that clip, brings back horrible memories of watching the show around then. It seemed as if everyone was on speed, and everything was being rushed. I think also they completely abandoned the regular elements of the Christmas show that year too. It was almost as if the editor was deliberately trying to ruin the show and had no care for it's history.

I've noticed since the current editor, Ewan, has been charge, the show has seen a huge improvement and is in a much more stable position than it was at that time. It's also not afraid to reference the past, with showing clips, and doing films about the train etc in recent years. I'm looking forward to seeing what else in the pipeline for the 60th anniversary. Would love to see BBC Four repeat some old episodes as part of the celebration.

Yes, I've been enjoying Richard Marson's book recently. It's amazing how quickly Blue Peter shifted from the large-scale, 'grown up' presentation in 2006-7 to that awful style that I posted above. I was a bit disappointed with the studio style of today, I must say. I don't think it's rowed back from that 'yoof' style as much as it perhaps ought to have done - although I'm 26, so hardly target audience!

There are some hilarious (if slightly catty) stories about Tim Levell (Marson's successor as Editor) in the book. I won't reveal them here, as you all should buy the book!

Back to the 2011 theme this week, so it looks like the mashup is only being used for special editions.

What's the deal with that new buzz app.

What's the deal with that new buzz app.

It's their last ditch attempt to be relevant in the app department.
