Did anyone else happen to see the beginning of Catchphrase this evening? Just as the voiceover was saying "Please welcome Roy Walker", it jumped to Roy saying a joke about Arab sheiks and their wives, followed by something about Iraq. This had clearly been preceded by something else. Looks like another example of having to cut stuff out that may be considered offensive in today's society!
I think some parts are edited for I am guessing that when they were on ITV in 1995 or 1996 (guessing by the endcap) that they usually gave viewers the chance to phone in for competitions, as I have noticed it can be poorly edited at breaks. Though they've changed series with it on Challenge so far as the graphics have changed and the voiceovers have switched from Ted Robbins to Charles Foster.
Though it's clear they leave Bullseye in one piece.
On a separate note, why did this episode from 1995 (the Lights era on Carlton) have the cartoon era endcap on it?
From what I remember at the time, the purply endcap was in use from late 1995, even though the presentation took until 1996 to change.
I don't think there was a specific 'lights era' endcap - the 'marbled' one used for most of this time I'm sure was introduced when Carlton still had their original presentation set; I don't think the original 'blue leafy' one lasted very long at all.

It could also have been the case that the programme was packaged for distribution during the cartoon endcap era?

Challenge's editing is very sloppy in places, I mean last week they let through an entire "Phone in to win" segment on last Friday's Catchphrase, although it's saving grace was that it was an 0891 number and wouldn't have worked anyway if you'd phoned it.
Most episodes of Takeshi's Castle seem to have been put together in a rush, for example. There's usually a nasty edit towards the end of most You Bet episodes with Matthew Kelly around the viewer phone-in area as well to chop it out. There's probably many more examples as well.

I remember once a couple of years ago when they showed a Stars In Their Eyes Final that was on ITV in the early 1990's and I can say I have never seen anything so badly edited, as if you may recall every time some one had sang the phone number would always be mentioned, I also recall in the Finals that they often had talks with people at BT on the phones!
I also saw a You Bet, with I believe Elizabeth Dawn doing something, but it was completley cut out! It went like...
'OK here's what you have to do....'
'OK Let's see the final scores!'
I don't see anything wrong with keeping them fully edited, if it is the case of out of date phone numbers, they should just insert a caption saying that this is a repeat and the phone number has since closed.

They do this with Family Fortunes because some episodes have the "if you want to be on the show, write to us at Lenton Lane, Nottingham, etc" over the end credits. A caption comes up with "Contestant Appeal now closed" or whatever. Not a lot else they can do under those circumstances. Although as things stand the address won't work soon anyway if ITV get their way over Lenton Lane
That sudden white flash at the start of the episode was originally where Roy Walker said "...and you could win £1000 just from sitting at home! More on that later".
And I believe this series was repeated on ITV in 1998, hence the newer endcaps.
