Obviously not sad enough for you to write the full 'rest in peace'.

I wasn't aware that he had cancer - but I liked his role in Casualty and remember his last few episodes well. He was certainly a decent actor.

Very sad news indeed. I always loved his character in Casualty and from interviews I saw of him he struck me as a very nice person.

What an utterly stupid thing to say.

Is there some written mandate somewhere that says that using the widely acknowledged "RIP" somehow fails to sufficiently acknowledge the sadness of someone's passing than 'rest in peace'? Could one only communicate the very deepest of sadness for someone's death by using the Latin 'requiescat in pace'?

I appreciate that many - myself included - despair over lazy spelling and the spread of txt spk, but 'RIP' is hardly a valid example to lambast, and it seems in very poor taste to do so when someone is simply making a respectful acknowledgement of somebody's death.

To me it smacks of jumping on the bandwagon like those endless threads like these we got a few months ago where you'd get pages and pages of 'a sad day of television Sad rip'. I'm sorry, I understand your point but I don't agree with it - I honestly think a little more effort would be nice.

So you're saying that you'd be fine with people jumping on the bandwagon in endless threads if they chose to say 'rest in peace' rather 'RIP'?

I thought your point was that the poster didn't feel sufficiently emotional to have written 'rest in peace' out in full; now you're saying that the poster was just jumping on a bandwagon - but if that's the point you're trying to make, then surely it would make no difference whether 'RIP' or 'rest in peace' was used.

What exactly was your point anyway? Was it that the poster wasn't feeling sad enough to write the full 'rest in peace', or was it that the poster was just jumping on a bandwagon? If it was the latter, I find it strange that you didn't mention that in your previous post. If it was the former, then obviously this bandwagon nonsense is just an attempt to obfuscate in the knowledge that you've said something very foolish.

Don't worry, dear, we all do it from time to time.

I tell you what I think is disrespectful - bickering over the correct way to pay a tribute in a thread where others are trying to make their tributes.

I'm quite sad about it, Harry was a great character in Casualty. Symbolised what a good doctor in the NHS should be and a lot of that was down to Simon's portrayal. I had no idea he was ill, he was a brilliant actor.

Please don't try to merge an actor with the role they once played. That is insulting to both the actor and the real-life profession.

Honestly, some of the comments here are so insensitive, how would you like it if you or your family were in a similar situation and all people did was bicker publicly?

Anyway, I wonder if tonight's episode of Casualty will be dedicated in his memory, I think it would be a nice touch if something was mentioned as the news may not have got round to all Casualty viewers.

I echo James Vertigans comments and think it is absolutely disgusting how you are arguing, somebody has died and the insensitivity shown in this thread by some members is appalling.

Aside from that the news of Simon MacCorkindale is extremely sad, he was a great actor and thought he played the best clinical lead in the show. He will be sincerely missed.
