CA's talking at inappropriate moments

Is it not time they learned when to shut the f**k up? (August 2005)

Just watched the last episode of Top Gear in the present series. A fun feature in the programme was the comission of a new version of the theme tune - created entirely from exhaust notes.

Despite sounding quite hideous, it was really funny and very well made - indeed I hate to think how much licence fee payers' money was spent in it's creation.

It was played once during the programme, and over the end credits.

Considering this was the first and only time, this quite funny and unique variation which took a lot of time to prepare, you'd think that it would be one of those moments when the CA would think 'yeah, i'll let this one go out clean'.

But oh no, instead we had a continuity announcement taking up half of the credits sequence with his chattering, even acknowleding that he knew what he was talking over.

When will they learn that their are occasions when the best job they can do is not to talk at all?

I was quite disappointed too, and I thought it was quite gratuitous that even after apologising for talking over it (thus taking even more time for the announcement), he went on to take his time and even plug a BBC Three programme, leaving only the last couple of seconds of the theme tune. I hope the announcer is more considerate with his/her wording on tomorrow's repeat.

....which I've just found out isn't happening because of the World Athletics....

I hate it when Sky One announcers start talking before the programme has even finished, I don't get the point of that at all.

It's because it's an automated playout of a pre-recorded announcement.

Also known to ruin endings on Sky Movies and Paramount Comedy.

For Neighbours fans, an interesting one will be a special 20th anniversary episode coming up in October featuring a 'documentary' style look at former residents as part of a storyline. The episode ends with past characters waving, saying goodbye etc.. over an instrumental version of the credits for about 75 seconds - fine for Australia but no doubt frowned upon by the Beeb due to their credit guidelines. It would be nice to think they could let it go just this once, even if the rules were bent by still having the clips but the credits themselves only appearing in the last 20secs or so. We shall see...

I too was pissed off to say the least. The first time it was played it was overshadowed by the audiences laughter and applause, then the CA even said "I'm sorry to talk over this audio masterpiece" or something to that effect. It obviously took quite a bit of time to make and we never really got to hear it.

If you believe the film though they only paid the audio people in discounted Clarkson videos and tickets to the Top Gear studio!

I agree with you in this case, but sadly the announcer doesn't get to make the decision, so you're blaming the wrong person.

So it's come to this: announcers are employed because they're lily-livered yes-men who will go in, day after day, and consistently fail to stand up to their bosses. They can always be counted on to do the wrong thing, and if challenged will whine that they were only following orders.

Well theres the bimbo on BBC 1 in the morning who I wish whould jusy not talk at all. Shes appauling as a CA, always fuffing and stuttering. Its like Gareth Gates mother...

Anyway, returning to the topic in hand, I do beleive that sometimes its just better to let it be. I always get really peeved during the motor racing when the idiots start up. Really, something should be done....

She wouldn't be Scottish by any chance? There was one babling over Neighbours the other day. Someone left the mike on and we could hear her say "Who me?" in the background just as the Grundy endboard came up.

Are you comparing CAs to SS guards here? Laughing

It's not a question of them standing up to their bosses; they work for a private company and have to carry out the wishes of their clients - in this case, the BBC.
