Extremely sad news to have to post. We have lost another comedy great.

BBC News:
Quote:
Comedian Caroline Aherne, who wrote and appeared in sitcom The Royle Family, has died at the age of 52.

Aherne, who also starred in Mrs Merton, had suffered from cancer, her publicist said.

The actress said two years ago that she had been diagnosed with lung cancer, having previously had bladder and eye cancer.

Aherne was also the narrator of Gogglebox and appeared in The Fast Show.

The Royle Family is one of my favourite programmes,

Her comedy was great, she will be sadly missed.

She'd already missed some Gogglebox episodes for some reason - because of her illness, I assume. Whoever covered for her will probably now get the job full time.

Yet another one gone too soon... RIP.

The Royle Family wasn't just a great sitcom, it changed sitcoms in this country. Observational comedy without a laughter track, absurdity with pathos, handheld single-camera shooting style.... it was trailblazing. She was naturally funny.

It was her close friend and Mrs Merton & Royle Family co-writer Craig Cash.

Craig Cash covers/covered for her, Gogglebox was their idea, they described it as The Royle Family and TV Burp combined.

2016 can shove its scythe up its arse.

Extremely sad news, especially considering recent reports that she was recovering. At one point even Ricky Tomlinson said there was talk of The Royle Family coming back because she was feeling better. I do hope she gets the tribute she deserves and not just something tacked on the end of Gogglebox.

Speaking of which, I imagine it'd be very difficult for Craig Cash to continue to work on Gogglebox. It'd be interesting to see how they handle it.

Although not completely unexpected it really is sad news, especially as she was very much in the Victoria Wood mould of being one of us.

I know she'll be remembered for The Royle Family and Gogglebox, but she was Mrs Merton for me.

I suspect GOLD will strip the schedules next weekend as it's too late for them to do it for Sunday.

Terribly sad news.

The scene she wrote for the Royle Family episode "The Queen of Sheba" when Nana sings "Que Sera, Sera" with Barbara shortly before she dies is one of the most moving and beautiful things I've ever seen on television.

I often made the mistake of dismissing The Royle Family as "just people sitting around". I came across the Queen of Sheba about a year after it was first shown, and considering I had no prior knowledge or affection towards the characters, I was completely gone by the end of it. Then I had to venture into the original series and I happened to fall in love with it shortly afterwards. Just a shame the newer specials couldn't live up to the originals.
