Hello me again, I did find that shocking because of the loud music, the star shaped branding iron zooming in and the suspicious CARL T ON logo fixed at the centre of the screen. I can tell you i was 9/10 years old seeing that and FYI my local Odeon is now an Empire cinema so I'll find it unlikely the CSA will change.

Are there any clips of this online? None of my local cinemas now use CSA and it would be nice to see it again.

Well it is illegal to film in a cinema... and their trailers on their website do not have a logo.
It is basically a hot brander in the shape of the Carlton star in a load of coal and fire, and it is pulled out and pushed onto the viewer with a loud bang.

Ah yes, I forgot about that, they've been using that for years now, and rather oddly it's the only Carlton branded asset ITV Plc has, and that it intends to keep and not to rebrand to Granada either. Though it scared the hell out of me when I first saw it (late 1990's I think) with a massive red hot star shaped poker thing coming right at you.

Ha that terrified me the first time aswell. Notice how piracy trailers have something similar. Notice they do not use the star at the end of the logo.

This ident has been used since Carlton Screen Advertising was created in 1997 (rebranded from Rank, that is to say) and was, IIRC, the first time a star appeared in conjunction with the Carlton logo, prior to it becoming part of the corporate logo in September 1999.

As for cinema company idents, well nothing's ever beaten Virgin's "Welcome to the world of Virgin Cinemas" (complete with good use of the surround system). All UCI (we still have them over here, for now) use is a "Book online at UCI.ie" trail with someone shivering, they used to have a really great animated ident with an orbiting planet. Haven't been to Vue since the rebrand from Ster Century. Disturbing, meanwhile, is the only way to describe the Vodafone-sponsored animation Ward Anderson use...

Odeon's ident was cool. It used to have glowing orange copper sparks in the dark with some cool music that everyone clapped along with. The name "ODEON" was revealed after a good 10-20 seconds. However, now it has been replaced with a dreary single blue copper spark going up and down, and the word Odeon is present the whole time. The music is crap and the whole thing only lasts about 7-10 seconds.

The Ster Century one used to be good (before it was taken over by Vue). It was basically flying through space.

The Vue one (not sure if it's still in use) is brilliant. It's basically people standing on a big square looking at the scenes going past. Genius.

Just a little snatch of an idea?

Without going OT, it's a bit odd at the moment, the last time I went to an Odeon converted UCI Cinema/The Film Works, the Odeon name was everywhere, but on screen they were still using everything to do with UCI, minus the UCI Ident, which they had changed by the late 1990's which was nothing like it's predacessor.

While we're on the topic of cinemas, I noticed this tonight:

Quote:
Iconic cinema theme re-written

For millions of cinema-goers the famous "Pa-pa, pa-pa pa-pa" of Pearl & Dean has been a part of the movie experience for decades.

From the moment the tune begins film fans know the main feature is just around the corner, after a brief commercial break.

Now the advertising firm has created a brand new version of the iconic Asteroid theme tune for the 21st century.

A specially arranged two-minute version was recorded by original composer Pete Moore at the Abbey Road studios in London with a 30-piece orchestra and two vocalists.

First recorded in 1968 and lasting just 20 seconds, the latest version features a female singer for the first time, and people will be able to download it from the internet.

Mr Moore said: "Many people in the UK music profession have accused me of writing music for the future, and well ahead of its time,

"Who`d have thought back in 1968 that we`d be re-recording the Pearl & Dean theme tune almost 40 years later for fans to download it?

"The only people who might have considered it back then were the characters in 2001: A Space Odyssey, which came out in cinemas the same year"

Pearl & Dean plans to make the track available via its website www.pearlanddean.com and through other download websites such as iTunes.

People will be able to download the tune to their MP3 player or use it as a mobile phone ringtone.

Kathryn Jacob at Pearl & Dean said: "Cinema-goers over the years have loved our theme tune, and we`re now giving fans the chance to get their hands on it.

"The massive popularity of Asteroids and our brand is all part of cinema tradition and I`m delighted to see it`s got as many fans today as it had in yesteryear."

As well as selling the theme tune on internet sites, Pearl & Dean hopes to make money in royalties from people using it in film and television documentaries.

Asteroid`s original screen titles featured equally distinctive graphics intended to emulate advertising panels flashing past as if the viewer was being sucked into the screen.

The song was only ever recorded in mono and by the early 1990s, when all adverts and trailers were given the full stereo treatment, the time came for it to be re-recorded.

On that occasion not only was original composer and producer Mr Moore tracked down, but the firm was also able to locate two of the three original male singers who could still replicate their vocal parts three decades on.

Then in 1995, Asteroid`s evergreen popularity was underlined when Goldbug (fronted by ex-Beatmasters` man, Richard Walmsley) sampled the Pearl & Dean anthem and made the number two slot in the singles chart with their version of Whole Lotta Love.

I can't remember it exactly, but I daresay it included a man and a gong:

Speaking of cinema welcome reels, our local Cineworld has an incredibly dated CGI monstrosity, featuring a Lara Croft look-a-like, enforcing the rules of the cinema.
