Ah yes, I forgot about that, they've been using that for years now, and rather oddly it's the only Carlton branded asset ITV Plc has, and that it intends to keep and not to rebrand to Granada either. Though it scared the hell out of me when I first saw it (late 1990's I think) with a massive red hot star shaped poker thing coming right at you.
(Similar to the early 1990's UCI ident, the one with the ball that kept coming closer and closer to the screen)

Oh, I thought you were raving on about the Carlton* logo that appears in the cinemas to provide adverts but this is different.

Although it's rumoured that Carlton Screen Advertising is next in line for the chop as a 'non core' asset to satisfy shareholders.

Ha that terrified me the first time aswell. Notice how piracy trailers have something similar. Notice they do not use the star at the end of the logo.
Imagine, Granada Screen Advertising or ITV Screen Advertising

I think the fact that it's not been rebranded as ITV or even (and possibly more appropriately) Granada Screen Advertising does imply that there are no long term plans to keep it within the ITV family.

Quite funnily enough I recall going to the cinema last month with my two little brothers to watch X men 3 and when they saw the Carlton* ident one of them said it was loud while the other said it was scary but when I first saw it (also in the late 90s) it made me jump a little.

The annoying thing is my local cinema (Odeon) now has over 20 minutes of Carlton Screen Advertising, and a further 10-15 of Trailers.
It is a strong identity, but I still HATE Carlton... grr
