Oh yes, Carlton's biggest program ever is Survivor! That really is the first show that springs to mind when the word Carlton is mentioned..

Which is bizarre considering Survivor was produced by Planet 24.

...who are owned by carlton.

But it was produced by Planet 24, not Carlton. The two are very different things.

I dont know then, papers quote whatever they like, like the peoplelisted a ten 10 list of comedies of all times which included rising damp but then said that no itv comedies were in the list! They dont bother getting facts right before printing or releasing, its as though they cant be bothered!

Please correct me if I am in error, but I thought the sets for Conternation Street were on a separate special lot from the main Granada TV building?

The main Granada TV building (the one with the old red lettering) is directly behind "Coronation Street". I'm sure a lot of the preproduction is done in the offices of the main building. I think the sets are located in a building disguised as the viaduct at the end of the street, but I'm not sure.

My sister and I went on a tour or Granada TV studios about 5 years and saw the sets, some of them are in that building you can see behind the Health Centre but as Granada has now stopped doing tours everything may have been moved around - we saw a few stars arriving for filming and they went into the main studios so I guess that means some filming is done in the main studios. I wish they studio's tours would re-open as id love to visit the Street set again!

I cant really think of many progs Carlton make now? Granada are the better of the 2 companies when it comes to programs, think how many great progs Granada and their regions like LWT and Yorkshire make.

What do people think of Nigel Pickard's Bafta Lecture:

http://media.guardian.co.uk/broadcast/story/0,7493,1059164,00.html

He addresses most of the points that are commonly mentioned on here, news, public service, the merger, regional programming etc

It has changed a lot since they closed Granada Studios Tours.

Well this just says it all :

Nigel Packard posted:
it is inevitable that there will be an increasing focus on those genres that sit more comfortably on a mass channel.

Instead of being so verbose, he could have just said

" More dumbed down programs "

or

" Even more trash tv ".

But we're fast approaching the point where special cases and special interests can no longer be accommodated on a mainstream channel

Well Granada did end up with a slightly better deal as far as the stations they got go. In the good old days, the big 5 network contributors were Thames, LWT, Granada, Yorkshire and ATV/Central. Granada have ended up with 3 of the big 5 contributors. Carlton may have won the kingpin franchise held by Thames, but they never produced anything in London - it was all contracted out. Carlton therefore only inherited Central as it's main production base. Granada on the other hand had themselves, Yorkshire and LWT. I'm not trying to compare them generally, but in terms of being recognised on the network, Granada has much more of a look in than Carlton does.

As MediaGuardian says, "Carlton will be little mourned"

Correct, the interior sets are indeed located in a building which has the viaduct as it's frontage.

Might interest.

Of note is the fact clean feeds will be provided to the non-Granada/Carlton companies... as it should be!

None of the buildings have a viaduct as their frontage!? There's a building which can be seen above the chippy and then there's the main Granada building behind the Rover's. Most of the new sets are in the big warehouse where the tours used to be, some are still in the Granada buiilding.
