when Granalton is bought by Hallmark.

Why are you so convinced that Hallmark is going to buy ITV PLC? They've been vaguely linked to a bid, but they haven't said anything.

Notice from the soundbites on the news;

The bloke from Granada goes on about improved programmes and the fact that 9 out of 10 top dramas this year was on ITV1. The bloke from Carlton goes on about how the station is branded and that one name is better than loads of different ones.

Those views follow though to what we've seen, what with Granada making most good shows but used to have poor idents, and vica versa with Carlton, less good shows, but obsessive about getting its name everywhere!

Notice also all the dumbed down reports with the opening titles of Coronation Street featuring a lot. Why Survivor keeps featuring I'm not sure, is that really Carlton's best offering, a show that was axed last year?

And it looks like the news teams have all been taping last night's viewing, with the Corrie titles, and pres from last night!

So what happens now? Not much, I expect. Not yet anyway. I'm not really bothered anymore anyhow, I only watch Coronation Street.

It's so strange how ITV - once the most popular channel in Britain and producer of some of the best television in the world could become so bad and lose so much money. I do wish that people would leave the ITV Digital fiasco out of it anyway - football players are extremely overpaid anyway.

As I said in my earlier post I wouldn't expect much to happen for now, it'll probably stay as ITV1, it's likely the schedule will still be the same and probably until mid 2004 the programmes will be the same, as they have been comissioned now and produced now it will have nothing to do with Granada Carlton / ITV plc, then whatever they comission in 2004 will have something to do with ITV plc. So it'll be the same for now, branding will probably stay the same, possibly with the change of endcaps at sometime, but IMO I wouldn't expect any major serious changes for now. But then again as youi said that you only watch Corrie, which the majority do so then no-one will be bothered, as long as programmes like Corrie, Emmerdale etc still go out, then most of us won't be bothered. And face it the worst which was supposed to happen, has happened, by this I mean the dropping of the regional names, and the majority of us have now got used to this look and in that area I would expect no change at all.

ITV Digital was just tough luck, but then Carlton and Granada did bid too much and really they should have left it to BSkyB IMO. It's because of this and probably other things it has led to ITV1 having a name with a bad reputation, which needs to be changed and this autumn it has started to, with quality programming in Prime Time, usually beating the BBC most nights and plus you must not forget that unlike BBC1 and BBC2, ITV1 does not rely on repeats in Prime Time most nights, comparing them to the Beeb who usually have to rely on a repeat of Del Boy to get a few million viewers, but this is becoming too often. Really ITV1 should be praised for doing this, though they have produced some crap shows, they're not repeats, they're usually fresh.

But I would expect no change, ie the ITV1 brand stays, regional adverts stay and regional programmes usually go out at 6pm and usually between 10.30 and 11.30pm. Though when the bosses of both companies were interviewed they said that they had increased regional programming, which I found hard to believe.

OT but; Who runs ITV2, is Carlton and Granada, or is it all 15 stations? As this I am confused by.

Plus what will happen when they release things like DVD's, which aren't made by ITV. eg Carlton releasing the Carry On films, will the Carlton brand be replaced with something like ITV DVD?

I wouldn't have thought that every single Granada/Carlton arm will change its name to "ITV (something)". Carlton Screen Advertising (who provide adverts for cinemas), for example, will probably keep the same name. After all, seeing the ITV1 brand in the cinema would just seem a bit odd...

It'd be a sneaky chance for advertising though... I presume it will become ITV advertising. I wonder whether Granada will take down the ancient red 'Granada' letters off their studios and replace it with a nice shiny "ITV Studios" logo?

I don't think they will it's becoming a classic, plus the studios are called 3SixtyMedia now and from what I have seen it still has G R A N A D A T V on both sides of the building.

It was nice to see some old idents on different news channels today. BBC News somewhere today showed an ITV Hearts Ident with the old, flat logo. Bless those Spinning Hearts! Granada Reports had an interesting story too, showing opening titles from the ITV regional news programs while the voice over goes on " Granada owns, Yorkshire TV, Tyne Tees, In the south Anglia and London Weekend etc etc"

When doing the "Top Stories" this afternoon, Sky News was running a Carlton ident which was then, for whatever reason, preceeded by Meridian (yeah I know Granada own them) and Carlton International. Then Mark Longhurst coming on in front of the newswall at about ten to three and getting the floormap out and stating that Granada own themselves... Smile

Don't worry too much about Jaron's views, Matt!

They don't amount to much!

Yeah, I've noticed all day that Sky News have a package consisting of Carlton hearts (but a pre 'ITV1' version), a Meridian ident last used in 1999, the Carlton International endcap, then an Anglia ident, again unused since 1999. And every time I've seen it stops there.

They also have another package, with the same Carlton ident followed by the old generic hearts ITV ident (complete with music).

Meanwhile the BBC have one featuring the current Granada endcap, and the old Carlton hearts ident (but an ITV1'd version).

Well for quite some time I was convinced that they were going to be bought by Viacom.
Then it turns out that Viacom is in rather bad shape with advertizing revenue down by about 50%,
so they are not going to have the cash to purchase Granalton.

So that leaves Hallmark. I am most likely wrong about this, but who else is there with any interest in buying Granalton?

RTL Group have never expressed any interest, and even give the impression that they might favor disowning "five", and retreating back to the mainland. Vivendi, owners of CANAL+, have just gone on a selling spree to try and get themselves on an even keel, so they will not be buying.

And remember that a possible dark horse candidate, Pearson, will not appear, since they are owned by the same company that owns RTL Group, namely Bertelsman.

It is erroneous to say that Hallmark have not expressed an interest in ITV.

Fears grow over ITV

The Observer

Fears are mounting that US broadcasters are waiting to asset-strip ITV after the revelation that US media group Hallmark is sizing up its library and production

The entertainment group, owned by the Hallmark greetings card giant, was revealed last week to be looking at the assets of Carlton and Granada.

Hallmark has confirmed that it is attracted by specific parts of the business rather than an overall purchase. 'There are some library assets and production assets there that we are interested in,' said a spokesman.

And you already know about the more recent Elstein led initiative on behalf of Hallmark.

What effect is this merger likely to have on the quality of ITV's Formula One coverage?
