How were some of them made? (February 2016)

They may have been themed but I don't think there was much more to them than them looking nice, and that simple requirement is often overlooked nowadays - C4 being a casing point where the idents are supposed to tell some sort of story but actually the Christmas ones which just looked nice were much much better.

It was more a case of what would suit the next programme, in a similar way ITV does now except it doesn't look anywhere near as nice.

I still think stories are for programmes, not the idents that precede them.

Another thing about Carlton presentation that this thread has reminded me of - how, towards the end of its time on air, Carlton started using the "from London" tagline that Thames used ("this is Thames - from London"). I simply assumed it was a personal choice from Mark Lipscombe, who worked on both, but the clips here show others using it.

May be official part of the script - the other Carltons had "Serving the Central region" or "serving the Westcountry" as part of their intro too.

Even HTV had "ITV1 in Wales".

In Central it was usually "Carlton Central [for the East/West/South Midlands]".

Yes, for all the flack Carlton got for wiping the Central/Westcountry brands, their regional continuity was a lot better than the generic announcements they played out from Leeds.
