All the studios space and more has gone to Emmerdale.
Cheers for that, so in one sense its have been mothballed as nothing else can really be used.

Well no, mothballed suggests the studios are empty and unused yet potentially ready to be used again.
Kirkstall Road studios are full, used and couldn't be reused for other recordings without rehousing Emmerdale. They are the exact opposite of being mothballed.

There are some good clips of Border archive on YouTube
for example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddOM5wopD7o
shows some good footage (not full reports)
Look for Borderfilmarchive
Thanks to whoever thought to put them there.

Actually the plan is to have Calendar in HD as well...
The studios aren't mothballed. The plan is to move Calendar back into one of them and upgrade the others to HD for Emmerdale, getting rid of the other buildings that Calendar and Emmerdale are in.

So would this mean there's a ITV1 HD for Yorkshire on the way, plus Calendar might be the first terrestrial regional news in HD too?

Remember that, in most cases, the news archive and the programme archive of the former ITV companies have been treated differently. The news library of ATV, Southern and TVS went to their successors, but their programme archives went elsewhere (ATV's went to Polygram=>Carlton=>ITV, Southern's went to Southern Star and TVS's mostly went to Disney). Thames' archive was kept intact as was TSW/Westward's and TVam's
Quite a few of the news archives for the BBC and ITV regions are now in the hands of the various regional film archives: http://www.movinghistory.ac.uk/archives/ This tends to be the older items in the archives. 20 or so years ago is probably enough for day to day news use, anything older than that would normally only be used in pre-planned reports and of course then they have time to get them from the organisation holding them. Also regional news premises wouldn't normally have the room for 50 years of film/ VT, let alone the ability to play them
Here are where some of the ITV/BBC regional archives are:
TSW/Westward/BBC South West are at the SWFTA
ATV/Central is at MACE
Tyne Tees/BBC North East are held at NRFTA
Meridian/BBC South: Wessex Film and Sound Archive
Anglia/BBC East: East Anglia Film Archive
Going back to the original question, it doesn't look like the Yorkshire Film Archive have Yorkshire TV material. Your best bet is to have a search on ITN Source's website: http://www.itnsource.com they hold ITV's news archive and handle clip sales
Even losing your franchise doesn't mean your archive goes in the bin - for example TSW and Westward's was put into what is now the South West Film and Television Archive, while TVS's ended up with Disney (due to buyouts). So Border junking theirs due to a studio move defies belief. If that's true, ITV should see some heads roll.
