A question about it's archives... (September 2011)

This site closed in March 2021 and is now a read-only archive

A quick question for everybody out there.

My Grandfather was featured in an edition of Calendar back in the early to mid-seventies. Is it possible that a copy of this would still exist and if so, is it possible to view it again? It might have been a 16mm insert but I am not sure.

It might be there but it will probably cost you hundreds for them to hunt it out and give you a copy.

It costs £60 for them to just look, then there's a £50 digitisation fee, and no guarantees it exists anyway, ITV plc. are complete dogs when it comes to archives.

Wasn't lots of Border's archives scrapped with the move from their old studios?

Is there anybody to contact regarding this?

@james: If that's true, the television preservationists would be in uproar!

Even losing your franchise doesn't mean your archive goes in the bin - for example TSW and Westward's was put into what is now the South West Film and Television Archive, while TVS's ended up with Disney (due to buyouts). So Border junking theirs due to a studio move defies belief. If that's true, ITV should see some heads roll.

The Same problem was has been said about Grampian television, its claimed that STV Junked alot of tapes, but good amount of 60's and 70's archive went to Scottish screen.. ( who has yet to fully catalogue it all)

STV never kept all of its archive from the late 70 and early 80;s I can run of a list if you want. Grampian never kept that 1986 game show.

I bet most of the border archive went to Leeds. but in both case something probably were junked,

arent all the archives for the 'northern' regions kept in Leeds I presume the Leeds Studios is just that an archive vault with the studios mothballed.

The studios aren't mothballed. The plan is to move Calendar back into one of them and upgrade the others to HD for Emmerdale, getting rid of the other buildings that Calendar and Emmerdale are in.

Close. Emmerdale are already in and there are rumblings about calendar moving into some of the space that was previously offices. There are definitely no mothballed studios.

But could there make other TV series in the studios? such as play your cards right etc? or has the big studio gone to Emmerdale only?
