Oh Jesus Christ, does this news have ANY Positive side to it?

Yes, Toonami's hours will be cut. Are you blind?

What a sad, sad choice to award a Freeview slot too.

Another +1 Channel. Woo.

It's not been awarded to another +1 channel.

None of those bidding for the slot would have had the channel ready to go the day after winning; the successful bidder - whoever that ended up being - would need a few months to put their new channel together, and in the mean time, the available slot would either be dead air, a static slide, a video barker, or a filler of some sort. It just so happens that C4 have decided that they don't want dead air or a static slide, and as they've probably not decided on what the channel will be yet, a video barker isn't yet an option. Rather than leave the slot doing nothing for the next few months, they've opted to temporarily place a More4+1 filler in there, so that at least there is some content filling the space, and of course the potential for at least a modest additional amount of commercial gain.

Once the new C4 channel is ready to launch, More 4+1 will be removed, and the new channel will begin to broadcast.

The original article does make clear that More 4+1 is a temporary choice with C4 already planning to make a new channel available later in 2006.

Another TV Channel on Freeview? How many do you get? or more importantly need?

There are now 36 24-hour streams, of which some of which are split into two or more channels.

4.5 of these are currently pay-TV offerings via Top Up TV, while three are interactive channels from the BBC.

Is it documented somewhere what time-limited channels are sharing with what?

Its obvious that BBC Three and BBC Four timeshare with CBBC and Cbeebies for example, but I was just wondering if its written somewhere who, for example, Ftn time shares with and so on. Not that its important, just be nice to know.

Everyone at five must be devastated at this news. No five.2 on Freeview then. Looks like out of the "get or die" policy, five has died.

Personally, I feel that the longer C5 stays out of multichannel, the better. The channel keeps getting better and better precisely because they *don't* have the option of spreading new content out more and more thinly over numerous additional channels, everything has to fit onto the one channel, which is what frequently keeps C5 with one of the strongest lineups there is. When they do inevitably launch a second channel (which will doubtless become 4 or 5 channels within an exceptionally short amount of time) they will end up going the same way that ITV has gone - a strong lineup overall, but because the material is so thinly spread each individual channel is quite weak and suffers from over-reliance on an ever dwindling portfolio of overrun programmes.

C5 however is still in the much stronger position of being larger than the sum of it's parts; there are no 'kingpin' programmes propping the whole lot up, a position which ITV and C4 (and increasingly, the BBC) have ended up in through having too many channels. The longer that continues, the better C5 will be for the viewer.

Top UP channels are on Multiplex A aren't they ? What with ITV now owning SDN who hold the licence to operate Mux A not sure that it's a wise move for Five to be cosying up to Top Up, which are on contract to use the space until 2010. Effectively then, ITV own the space and can do what they like with it, or does it go back to Five ? Five should have been securing some space of their own, otherwise their multi-channel ambitions look a bit shaky.

The space on multiplex A is split 50/50 between S4C and Channel 5. SDN hold the multiplex service licence to run the multiplex on their behalf. However, it will always be C5's/S4C's gifted space and they will always, ultimately, be able to reclaim it when the contracts allowing other broadcasters to use it expire. Only the government can change this.

ITV plc have not bought the space, they have bought the company which controls the space. This puts ITV in a stronger position in that when contracts expire, then if S4C/C5 decide to continue to allow their spare space to be contracted out, ITV plc will be deciding who goes in there.

However, although ITV plc will be involved in future decisions about broadcasting on SDN, they cannot buy the rights to the space itself; it will never be their space, and if S4C and C5 ultimately decide they want to fill it out with their own channels, ITV plc can do nothing to stop this from happening, regardless of their ownership of SDN.

Just to add that it has now been confirmed C4 have won the slot, with More4+1 taking it for now.

No confirmation of what will replace it - it seems to be more a case of "future proofing" the slot for later use.

MediaGuardian are reporting that C4 are "considering" making FilmFour a non-subscription channel and putting it on Freeview, believing there is a gap in the market for a film channel.

The loss of subscription revenue would mean the channel, which now makes a modest profit, would likely see the end of uninterupted films with advertising introduced to make up for revenue loss.

FilmFour and FilmFour Weekly are currently available for £7 a month.

It looks like FilmFour could possibly fill Channel 4's new Freeview slot according to MediaGuardian...

MediaGuardian posted:
Channel 4 could scrap the subscription on its premium FilmFour service and put the movie channel onto Freeview next year.

Such a move, which would see the FilmFour go from 400,000 subscription homes to 15m homes with digital TV, is being considered by the Channel 4 chief executive, Andy Duncan, but no decision has been presented to the board.

Mr Duncan is mulling several options about how to use the channel's Freeview capacity but believes there is a gap for a film channel even though ITV2 and ITV3 frequently screen movies.

If Channel 4 decides to make changes it must approach Sky and negotiate to take FilmFour off the premium platform.

I for one would welcome FilmFour on Freeview, ad breaks or not.
