Who is this Simon Shaps character anyway ? Does he have experience of programme making or is he just another man in a suit ? ITV seem to be pre-occupied with marketing and branding, they can ill afford what talent they have left to slip through their fingers.
I don't know much about him, he appeared in Melvyn Bragg's obituatry^^^^sorry, celebration of ITV at 50 series.
The Daily Telegraph in reporting the O'Grady story claims that Shaps threw furniture around his office he was so upset

I suggested Cilla the other day, and I was thinking Bradley would be good as well following his stint on Des and Mel. I could do Shap's job!

Cilla Black and comedian-turned-Coronation Street actor Bradley Walsh are among the names in the frame to replace Paul O'Grady in ITV's tea-time entertainment slot.
Sources at network centre have revealed that the desperate search for a quick replacement for The Paul O'Grady Show, which was due to return in March, has already started in earnest.
Black is believed to have told friends that she is being considered for the presenting role. But there are major question marks whether she would go up against O'Grady, who is a close friend of the star.
Black is however friends with the network again after returning to the channel as a judge on the successful entertainment show Soapstar Superstar, which topped 6 million viewers.
Walsh may be a more likely option having successfully stood in for Des O'Connor on daytime show Today with Des and Mel.
Other outsiders for the role could include I'm a Celebrity winner Joe Pasquale, who piloted two show for ITV's 5pm to 6pm slot for when O'Grady was off air. The commission went to Richard Hammond's 5 O'Clock Show.
One of the short term options could be to extend the run of the Hammond show, which has only been getting about half of the ratings that O'Grady was getting. Another initial solution would be to bring back a best of the O'Grady offering for a short run.

I don't think Cilla would go up against Paul as they have a very good friendship - Joe Pasquale might be quite good though, comedy in an afternoon.
I know of some other people being considered for the job, but I'm afraid I can't really say who at this stage.

But O'Grady was friends with R & J and still went up against them. This is one of THE most important decisions that ITV have to make, they can't have another bomb like Hammond!! Simple rule of them, 9 times out of 10 a crappy pilot equals a crappy show!!

I get the feeling that Cilla and Paul are stronger friends than him and R + J were, but it could just be me reading into things.
I don't think ITV will cock up this decision, far from it in fact...
I'd like to see something different in the slot really - as long as it's not a cheap version of a primetime show or a resurrected soap.
It's also interesting if they'll consider different tactics for competing against Richard and Judy and Paul O'Grady. It be wise to have a more youth-orientated show against R+J, while POG is more difficult considering is wide appeal.

That is a great point and an excellent idea. Tailor your shows to take on the competition. I think there's more likelihood of toppling R & J than O'Grady at the moment.
