You never know, this could be something to do with the new rebrand of ITV? Confused: Confused:

Moving on, if all gloves are off ITV need to poach Deal or No Deal now and offer the makers silly sums of money.

Erm, remember the entire 3-6.30pm schedule on Channel 4 is presented by people or made up of programmes that used to be on other channels, from Des Lynam to The Simpsons

I thought Channel 4 was supposed to be about innovation and developing their own up and coming stars not just flashing the cash at other channel's stars. They are turning into Channel 5 at this rate!

So because Deal Or No Deal being hosted by a man who worked at the BBC years ago and was written off as a hasbeen makes the programme un-innovative and un-original? I dont ever recall seeing a programme where people simply open boxes for 45mins being successful to such a huge degree in the UK before.

Maybe The Simpsons, R&J, Paul O'Grady and Des Lynam have a history at other channels but for each one of them there are many, many other orignal shows and new presonalities on Ch4 from Peep Show to Grand Designs and from David Starkey to Sarah Beeney.

Wasnt Paul O'Grady/Lily Savages big break on the Big Breakfast bed 10yrs ago?

Dunno about that, DOND seems to me to be one of those programmes with limited long-term popularity. After a while it gets tedious.

I must of been the only one who saw this coming. Richard & Judy are good friends with Paul, i thought a few months back that something like this may happen.

This from the Broadcast website goes into even more detail, he's still on the same money!!!

EXCLUSIVE: C4 poaches Paul O'Grady
Paul Revoir
10 January 2006 15:10

Channel 4 has poached ITV daytime star Paul O'Grady in a dramatic move that will deal a massive blow to ITV's new director of television Simon Shaps.

O'Grady will join the broadcaster on a two year "daytime exclusive" deal to present a new five days a week show at 5pm, the slot where he currently presents his hit ITV show. The show is expected to be air in the spring of this year.

At the same time Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan have agreed an extension to their existing contract with channel, which will see them and Paul O'Grady share the 5pm slot throughout the year.

O'Grady is understood to be on the same talent fee that he is on at ITV, but the presenter's own production company Wildflower, is expected to make the show, which will net the Lilly Savage star significant further cash.

ITV executives were said to be "ashen faced" when finding out earlier today that O'Grady was switching sides. O'Grady has been out of contract with the broadcaster since the end of last year.

One insider said: "It's the biggest talent transfer for years. ITV are absolutely shell-shocked by the news. It's like the attack on Pearl Harbour - they were never expecting this."

The news is particularly worrying for ITV as its daytime performance had been in the doldrums before O'Grady arrive - largely due to Five poaching its former daytime star Trisha Goddard.

O'Grady is the second major daytime star that Channel 4 has poached from ITV after pinching Richard and Judy in a move which also caused major embarrassment for ITV executives.

Maybe the news of Paul's departure is no coincidence given the reshuffle going on within ITV. Claudia Rosencrantz, has departed from the network after 10 years managing ITV's entertainment programming and star names and Nigel Pickards departure is imminent.

Claudia and Nigel are the names that celebs thank whenever they collect their awards, and I don't think it's beyond the realms of possibility that could have had an impact upon this decision. Somebody hasn't had their finger on the pulse by failing to renew Paul's contract.

Who is this Simon Shaps character anyway ? Does he have experience of programme making or is he just another man in a suit ? ITV seem to be pre-occupied with marketing and branding, they can ill afford what talent they have left to slip through their fingers.

But it says his own production company will make it which technically means he's on more money.

It's still not a very nice way to treat the people who rescued him from a dire bingo hall based sitcom into an award winning presenter

Remember he did the same with the BBC and Blankety Blank

and if the show had done badly it'd have been axed - business is business.
It works both ways - he was the saviour of their daytime schedule; they should have had him secured.

And where did all the money go that could have kept him there? Yet another rebrand! Seems ITV cares more about its screen image than its product.

That's got absolutely nothing to do with it. ITV have the money and presumably were willing to part with it, after all the Paul O Grady Show must have made a tidy profit for ITV. The issue is that they they didn't renew his contract soon enough. Although I'm sure C4 offered him more money... he'd have got that from ITV

Besides in a company that big the amount spent on branding and the amount spent on a chat show are very small and not associated with each other - marketing and procustion are very diffrent departments with diffrent budgets and management

Well, he and any other owners will get whatever's left after the programme is mad, But the main incentive will be the extra control he'l have over the production

But then not giving a new contract to the award winning presener isn't a very nice way to treat him either!

If the stories are true and there is nothing more to it, I can't believe they didn't get a new contract organised. Surely it should have been done months ago. Especially as he was pencilled in to be back in the middle of Feb after 6 weeks of the 5 O'clock Show

No doubt the person responsible will now be looking for a new job. That is unless they are off sick and there's a post-it on their desk 'Remember to renew Paul O'Grady's contract'!
