Can you really see BBC1 putting programmes out PROMOTING atheism, or having a woman in a niqab do a Christmas message, or showing Eminem concerts uncut, Seymoure Butts documentaries, soaps with Hollyoaks In The City-type snuff film storylines?
Perish the thought that BBC1 would move away from its comfy drama/docusoap remit. Booooring.
I also think it's important to remember that it's not so much C4 going mainstream, but BBC and ITV going niche as well.
Alot of programmes on C4 would still fit very uncomfortably into the schedules of other channels - and when the BBC and ITV especially attempt to cover the same genres, they rarely get away with it in the same way C4 does, generally with the BBC making things out to be more educational than they are and the opposite problem for ITV!
Back on topic and they could at least have given a festive twist to the break bumpers and trailers. The break bumpers are piss easy to do - just changing the images behind the animations, and they could easily make some simple idents using the menus with festive images / music replacing the usual content. (I've noticed lately the menus are increasingly being used as idents).
However, a simple Christmas ident isn't too much to ask surely, especially as they did promos in the style for The Killers and U2 weekends.
Idea for Channel 4 christmas ident: aerial view of a house all lit up for christmas (you know, the sort of decorations that double the drain on the national grid) - then slowly descend to ground level, revealing sixteen trillion watts of coloured lights making up the "4". You could even use the original colours for a bit of added Christmas nostalgia.
Just put some tinsel in the Tokyo ident anyway im fecked off that ugly betty starts 5days earleir here with a doubke bill come on c4 pull your finger out

I'm guessing Channel 4 are trying catch up, currently ABC has their shows on Christmas Break and won't show the rest til January or February.
No idents - but they seem to be making a point of playing out their better ones - never seen Tokyo on air so much!
Also as I thought the menus, and possibly some of the break bumpers, do have more festive images in the background behind the "4" - though they don't exactly scream out Christmas!
As for idents generally - I don't watch much of the C4 US comedies, certainly in the morning, but are they still using the New York taxi ident - haven't seen it for months!
Yup, that ident has been around for quite a while now. Not caught too often though, so probably quite a few people haven't seen it yet. The Rocks one came after it but gets used more.
Hopefully the sofa will stick around with a different image on the box!
I think they should have used that (and the unaired Old Man ident) for Christmas as kind of anti-Christmas idents.
They may not appear very festive - but it's more likely by the end of Christmas Day alot of viewers will be slouched out on the couch rather than rolling giant snowballs outside!
While the other has beer in - perfect!
I bet the Old Man ident might get a premiere next week either around Celeb BB or Ugly Betty.
They should have launched the old man ident into The Secret Policeman's Ball at midnight on 31 Dec / 1 Jan. They'll never have a more perfect opportunity than that!
